The environmental catastrophe unfolding in East Palestine, Ohio has helped remove doubt about withdrawing misplaced faith in a failing system. The repeated bold-faced lying of officials, from EPA Administrator Regan to Ohio Governor DeWine and Transportation Secretary Buttigieg, has laid bare Democrats’ appalling indifference to the preservation of the natural world. All of the statements and actions by the industry and their puppets have made the indifference, contempt and hostility of the political class and their donors toward poor and working class Americans, not only perfectly obvious, but impossible to ignore. While God fearing, tax paying, rule following citizens continue obeying laws that are selectively enforced and naively asking their representatives to “do something about this,” the industrialists who own those politicians are slowly killing our children and laughing all the way to the bank.
Anyone remotely close to Ground Zero East Palestine knows that their loved ones are under attack, that the criminals responsible are lying right to their faces, and the responses predictably benefit those in power. Does anybody honestly expect daddy government to come and take care of them at this late stage of the game? Recent polls suggest that a majority are indeed savvy to the harsh reality that Daddy Government only caters to rich donors. Those in power can be depended upon to look the other way as long as they’re getting paid to. That means they’re complicit in helping these companies poison you and everyone you know.
Many Americans are beginning to discover that peaceful protest only works if your enemy has a conscience.
The people of East Palestine (and surrounding affected areas) are rightfully very pissed off right now, because they know they’re being lied to. They’re puking blood while bureaucrats tell them the air is clean. Jackals are swooping in with gaslight fairy tales written by criminal negligence. The locals are getting sicker and sicker and are well aware that the regulators and politicians are in the back pocket of big business.
When criminals write laws, people of conscience must stop cooperating. Lest they become criminals as well by aiding and abetting criminal activity through the implied consent of perpetual silence. The Nuremberg defense that “I was just following orders” has never been an adequate one and those who used it in the trial for which it is named were hung for their complacency. On the ethical question of who ultimately bears the karmic weight between the executioner and his political bosses who order the executions, courts have historically ruled against the former.
But what are we supposed to do about it?
Friedrich Nietzche famously observed that, “To predict the behavior of ordinary people in advance, you only have to assume that they will always try to escape a disagreeable situation with the smallest possible expenditure of intelligence.” The oligarchs running the country know this as well. And they test the obedience of their citizen subjects daily through our willingness to act against our own interests.
Anger is the appropriate response to violation. There is nothing more fearsome than a mother bear defending her young, but human society has become so inundated with propaganda messaging that we’ve actually been conditioned to feel shame and guilt for having an angry response to a violation. Our politically correct corral has cowed the surfs into thinking we aren’t “allowed” to get upset about injustice because that’s just unnecessary “negativity.” By this logic, poisoning entire regions isn’t considered negative, but calling out the fact that it happened is.
Americans’ pathological aversion to conflict has caused us to conflate cowardice with pacifism.
What are you supposed to do when your family are suffering and dying from untreatable illnesses that were deliberately imposed into the environment by greedy executives who then profit from the disaster? If someone comes into a house with a weapon and looking to rob and rape, are the residents of that home not allowed to defend themselves? And if so, what about when a corporation robs them of their health and finances and future?
MORE REGULATIONS WON’T SOLVE ANYTHING
The problem isn’t that there aren’t enough laws. The problem is they’re selectively enforced. Writing more laws disproportionately impacts small businesses and the non-wealthy. Mafioso oligarchs and corporate criminals have no respect for existing laws, and they aren’t about to obey new laws that don’t favor their interests. And when regulators have done their job and taken the maximum actions they’re allowed by law against the big companies responsible for horrible disasters and deliberate exploitation, nobody ever goes to jail. Instead, companies are given relatively inconsequential fines that amount to nothing more than a drop in the bucket – the cost of doing business – and the wheels of industry keep chugging right along. Since industry began infiltrating and capturing regulatory agencies, the revolving door policy corrupts regulatory power as a matter of standard policy.
The system isn’t broken. It’s fixed.
As this system is currently structured, nobody in power has any obligation to follow any of the laws, whether its cops, judges, lawyers, politicians or corporations. If your neighbor decides to burn a pile of tires on their property, the enforcement boot of the state would show up instantly to stomp on their throat. But a railroad corporation is allowed to do something thousands of times as harmful and maybe pay a little fine later on down the line.
Why do the citizens of the “freest country in the world” continue to bear the brunt of such evident tyranny?
If a poor food service worker makes a mistake on their income taxes (which are unlawful to begin with), they’re smashed in the face with a sledgehammer and branded a “tax cheat” while huge companies like Verizon and General Electric don’t pay a cent into the same kitty. If citizens continue to remain calm and follow the rules of this rigged game while their children literally puke blood, the criminals have already won.
We cannot solve these problems politically. We got here by thinking that the citizen’s obligation to the management of their communities begins and ends in the voting booth. It doesn’t. Industry controls the outcome of every election by donating to both mainstream political parties. It’s not broken. It’s fixed. And we must stop voting ourselves further into tyranny.
Citizens must stop pretending we can solve our problems incrementally or by piecemeal reform when all the levers of democratic power have been seized by snakes in suits.
Cancer cells can only thrive in our bodies when our immune systems drop the ball and fail to identify and exterminate them. In exactly the same way, America’s metaphorical immune system of the warrior class has been severely weakened by decades of endless wars that have sent the defenders of our communities overseas to fight and die at the behest of the same corporate forces now attacking the midwest. Those who had the instinct to protect their homes and survived that effort came back so broken that huge numbers of them took their own lives. How can communities defend themselves now? The cancer of corporatism has completely taken over the country, just like Thomas Jefferson said it would.
Train workers have voiced concern for years and even predicted something like this would happen. And it doesn’t take an advanced degree in engineering to understand that heavier trains carrying longer loads with fewer employees on tracks that aren’t being maintained properly constitutes a perfect-storm recipe for disaster. When railroad workers planned a strike to get the word out about these concerns, the Biden Administration passed legislation to stop them.
“US commentators also point to a possible link between the train disaster and the ongoing conflict between US railroad workers’ unions and the Biden administration. The unions have been on strike for months, one of the main reasons being rationalization measures associated with the acronym PSR: Precision Scheduled Railroading. According to railroad workers, PSR results in fewer staff, less maintenance, fewer vacation days, longer trains and questionable business practices, with railroad companies being forced to keep their trains moving as much as possible for profit reasons.”
But Biden is just the latest Wall Street puppet to sit ceremoniously in the Oval Office. Both corporate parties did this over a period of the past three decades at the behest of the unified engine of industry that has seized control of the government by paying off both sides. Both wall-street sponsored teams bear responsibility for the mushroom cloud of poison death, including Biden, Trump, and Obama. Administration after administration characterized by industry lobbying and deregulation. There used to be a law requiring the labeling and declaration of hazardous materials on transportation manifests, but the industry lobbied congress to get that law nixed. Train 32N that derailed in East Palestine, Ohio was carrying highly toxic chemicals that nobody in a position of power was aware of because it wasn’t declared; it wasn’t declared because the industry had successfully lobbied congress to remove the requirement. And these aren’t partisan decisions.
Norfolk Southern gave millions of dollars to dozens of politicians in key strategic locations to exert maximum and absolute influence over the governing policies. The result yielded mass layoffs amid share buybacks and executive bonuses. It’s also part of the reason Norfolk Southern exists as a regional monopoly. Nobody can compete with them. And while they bragged about electronic braking systems to excite their shareholders, they simultaneously fought against government regulations requiring them.
Interestingly, the Bezos-owned Washington Post could not find “a single regulatory change made by the Trump administration [that] caused the derailment to happen.” Of the several administrative decisions analyzed by Glenn Kessler, the only one that’s even remotely relevant has to do with Electronically Controlled Pneumatic brakes (ECP). While it is true that the Trump Administration’s Department of Transportation found the costs of EPC brakes “outweighed the benefits,” the liberal WaPo shares the conclusions made by the current NTSB Chairwoman:
NTSB chair Jennifer Homendy said on Twitterthat the repealed rule was not relevant to the accident. “The ECP braking rule would’ve applied ONLY to HIGH HAZARD FLAMMABLE TRAINS. The train that derailed in East Palestine was a MIXED FREIGHT TRAIN containing only 3 placarded Class 3 flammable liquids cars,” she wrote. “This means even if the rule had gone into effect, this train wouldn’t have had ECP brakes.”
And while it is certainly true that Trump bragged quite a bit to industry donors about his administration’s efforts to remove the pesky burden of regulations, it’s also true that his predecessor bragged about it too:
“Now there’s no question that some regulations are outdated, unnecessary or too costly. In fact I have approved fewer regulations in the first three years of my presidency than my republican predecessor did in his. I’ve ordered every federal agency to eliminate rules that don’t make sense. We’ve already announced over 500 reforms and just a fraction of them will save business and citizens over ten billion dollars over the next five years.” ~President Obama
Even if these political players were conceivably honest, Buttigeig and the Biden Bros are powerless to regulate these companies because these companies have bought and sold the US government and all its puppet politicians 100 times over for countless years. The last time Biden was at the helm was after the Citibank memo, where bankers decided and directed every cabinet position within the Obama White House. Webster Tarpley observed in 2009 that never before in the history of the country had an administration been composed entirely of and exclusively from the Wall Street ilk.
VOTING HARDER DOESN’T WORK
Waving pom-poms for either side of the Coke/Pepsi dog-and-pony show is no longer acceptable for anyone sincerely interested in solving the problems of this failed state.
When the twin towers collapsed into their own footprint in 2001, George “Dubya” Bush was on the scene three days later. Yet, the worst ecological disaster in American history wasn’t worth a presidential visit in 2023. Instead, Biden went the other direction and left the country. Then later he couldn’t recall whether he’d spoken to the mayor of East Palestine or not.
Biden’s Administration have ignored the crisis in Ohio and daily make their priorities clear by not even mentioning it. In fact, when the crisis initially reared its ugly head, Joe Biden’s handlers got him out of the United States, launching his demented face to Ukraine, scuttling him as far away as humanly possible while the toxic dioxin cloud began to settle over the east coast. Biden arrived in Ukraine to midwife the exchange of billions of dollars in foreign aid that could otherwise be spent assisting with the domestic disaster. Meanwhile, the presidential tweets and statements seem to reveal that the official POTUS handlers may not have even let him become aware of the tragedy, as every single statement uttered from the White House drips with inconsequential nonsense.
The job of a politician used to involve lying and cajoling the masses on behalf of huge corporate donors; to screw the masses over while simultaneously making the hoi polloi fond of the chosen politician. And though seemingly of good intentions, this new savior’s hands are always tied by the inequities of yesteryear’s leaders and bad decisions made by previous administrations. To secure votes, the politician’s job was to make the voters at least feel like their owners care about them. Donald Trump seems to still understand this, as evidenced by his gesture of delivering truckloads of supplies to the recently traumatized people of East Palestine, Ohio including pallets of water emblazoned with the Trump logo followed by free meals at McDonalds. Whether Mr. Trump sincerely empathizes with the people of Ohio seems less relevant than the fact that he’s at least making the effort. So the former president is doing a better PR job than the current boss, meaning Biden and the democrats won’t even act like corrupt politicians anymore. They’ve somehow mutated into something even lower.
We cannot solve this problem with the same level of thinking that created it.
The belief that we can outsource the management of our communities by electing venal politicians who consistently deliver similar results has led our civilization down a blind alley where we are led by the least capable and most corrupt among us. Unless and until we put appropriate pressure on the captains of industry who own the politicians through the legalized bribery laundering program of campaign financing, nothing can ever get better for America’s poor and working class.
As was the case with Wal-Mart’s dead peasant insurance policies, the corporate state profits off of our death free of consequence by paying the watchdogs to look the other way. Norfolk Southern lobbied the 2022 midterm elections with $1.8 million. Shortly after the East Palestine disaster, Michigan Governor Whitmer announced plans to give $15 million of taxpayer dollars to Norfolk Southern, officially so they can expand their operations. Undoubtedly the company could sure use the cash right now to help pay off those fines they’ll be on the hook for soon.
Governor DeWine too must act in the interests of Norfolk Southern, but so many people are afraid of having their reputation ridiculed by notions of “conspiracy theory.” The sobering fact remains that Governor DeWine is obligated to serve his donors. Industry captains bribe politicians to squash worker strikes. The system isn’t broken. It’s fixed.
There are no political solutions.
Railroad Workers United had planned a strike at the beginning of this year to protest this very problem, but the Biden Administration declared the strike illegal. More than ever our collective survival requires people of conscience disobey unjust laws written by irrational authorities.
It is the duty and obligation of relevant workers to stop this from happening anymore and to cease working until reforms are made. Resign your office. Abandon your post.
If employees know that showing up to work might cost thousands of innocent lives, it is their duty to stop the potential of further harm, and it is the responsibility of their colleagues to support them. If rail workers are armed with the knowledge that clocking in will permanently poison an entire ecosystem as well as the drinking water of millions of people, it would be inconceivable to show up for work until drastic changes occur, no matter what the legal consequences may be. Those in power made the general strike illegal for a reason. It remains the obligation of freedom loving people to defy unjust laws.
Communities can and ought to adopt local ordinances that make this kind of corporate pillaging impossible. East Palestine could adopt a temporary injunction on the rail, shutting it down until the cleanup has been completed and verified by third party companies lacking industry ties. They could supplant industry preemption clauses by implementing community ordinances with force that’s exerted by residents who are deputized to enforce the anti-corporate laws. There’s also been talk of nationalizing the rail in a similar way to the US Highway system.
But none of the good ideas can ever take root unless the barriers to reform are forcibly removed, and that’s never going to happen in the voting booth. Waiting for the world to get better every four years has consistently resulted in more corruption, more pollution, and more tyranny.
Status Coup News interviewed an East Palestine grandmother named Stella who told them the railroad is worth $58 billion:
“And they’ve already bought and paid for the government. They are the government. You know the billions of dollars that their lobbyists have spent buying our officials? … There is nobody to save us from this. We are going to be buried under a rock just like every other place that this ever happened to. And the ramifications from it are going to go way further than East Palestine. … We’re just another sacrifice that they’re willing to make.”
And now after nearly two months of ongoing reports from Ground Zero Ohio, the corporate media have stepped up the damage control efforts into full overdrive mode with a new round of Russiaphobia.
The Associated Press further minimize the situation by accusing anyone reporting the truth as an anti-American propaganda stooge attempting to destabilize the country through fear. If someone opposes the regime publicly the corporate media push their damage control operations into overdrive with ad hominem attacks accusing the disloyal sympathizer of betraying their country to America’s officially declared enemies, whether they be communists or terrorists or Russians. Even Bernie Sanders was accused of colluding with Russian interests and Rachel Maddow’s broadcast of fear made Russian attacks on North Dakotan infrastructure seem imminent: “What would happen if Russia killed the power in Fargo today?” When backed into a corner, corporate sociopaths triple down on their lies with easily disprovable logical fallacies, transparent political attacks and feeble misdirection. Among the most truly pathetic responses is the McCarthyite tendency.
Given the present late-stage of America’s infrastructural decay, and given the out-of-control greed exhibited by the captains of late-stage capitalism, and given the impotence of our bought-and-paid-for bureaucrats helpless to respond in the face of a crisis that was created by their campaign donors, this latest chapter in America’s ongoing disaster saga seems like a canary in the proverbial coal mine that if we choose to ignore, we do so at our peril. The people making the world worse have names and addresses. Since they own the mechanisms of enforcement, different kinds of incentives will be required if their behavior is ever to be adjusted.
In the context of bomb trains, it’s ultimately up to rail workers to defend the lives of their neighbors’ children and strike. Because the next toxic contamination could very easily happen in your back yard, and then it will be too late to protect your loved ones from exposure. Go on strike, for the love of God.

The ongoing catastrophe in East Palestine, Ohio, dubbed America’s Chernobyl, isn’t just the result of greedy profiteering. The arrest of News Nation journalist Evan Lambert at the Governor’s press conference following the apocalyptic chemical fireball was not just a mistake. The characterization of celebrity activist Erin Brockovich as a “special interest terrorism threat” following her visit to Ohio’s Ground Zero isn’t an accident. The patrolling of East Palestine by a garrison of private railroad police is no longer considered unusual. The Netflix adaptation of Don DeLillo’s 1985 book White Noise airing three months prior to the event isn’t just predictive programming. The rushed roll out of the biometric My-ID program in the weeks leading up to the disaster isn’t just a coincidence. And that iconic black mushroom cloud of death generated by the million-gallon cocktail of poisonous chemical carcinogens that was visible from space wasn’t just the largest single dioxin plume in history. Since the Department of Defense “Unified Command” decision to burn toxic vinyl chloride into the atmosphere generated a great deal of poisonous gases in the forms of phosgene and acrolein – literal chemical weapons employed during the First World War – this explosion and subsequent cover up represents one of the most heinous acts of state terrorism against a domestic population on record. A single event has rendered the drinking water of 25 million Americans as well as the arability of thousands of farms potentially compromised with bio-accumulative forever chemicals.
East Palestine (pronounced “Pal-Ess-Teen”) is a rural town 50 miles west of Pittsburgh. The once thriving community of 4,700+ now feels like an eerie ghost town. Businesses are closed. Many residents never returned following the mandatory evacuation. Delivery drivers refuse to come anywhere near the town out of concern for their health. Surrounding school sports teams that were scheduled to compete in East Palestine are forfeiting games and events for the same reason. Many drivers passing through the area reported the sudden onset of nose bleeds, cloudy eyes and rashes after doing so. Locals say they they now feel drunk and mentally altered after spending short periods of time in their homes and businesses. School children universally report pink eye and upset stomachs. Communities throughout the region are reporting an oily sheen on the water, translating to the thousands of empty plastic bottles of water piling up as locals no longer trust the tap. Norfolk’s trains continue to scream through town, kicking up visible clouds of toxic fallout dust along their way.
Many residents reported their symptoms immediately after the derailment and continue to grow sicker, yet authorities have insisted since day one that the air is safe to breathe and the water is safe to drink. How can this be? EPA officials, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, and US Transportation Secretary “Pothole Pete” Buttigieg universally signaled the “all clear” loudly, emphatically, and repeatedly throughout every phase of this disaster’s first chapter. They’ve drug their feet and made excuses on behalf of the industry in a vane attempt to gaslight the locals into questioning their own sanity. The industry-funded clinic told locals that the skin rashes now affecting more than half of the remaining residents are likely due to stress, not chemicals. They’ve also told locals with a straight face that the symptoms they’ve suffered from since the explosion “could be from a wide variety of causes” including “springtime allergies.” But the locals aren’t buying it because they can smell the toxins and feel the dissonance.
“People wouldn’t be getting sick if it was OK,” said resident Shelby Walker to the Post Gazette.
Resident Wade Lovett told reporters on 25 February that his voice actually changed pitch after the accident to a kind of high-pitched helium-voice: “My voice sounds like Mickey Mouse. My normal voice is low. It’s hard to breathe, especially at night. My chest hurts so much at night I feel like I’m drowning. I cough up phlegm a lot. I lost my job because the doctor won’t release me to go to work.”
Ashley McCollum says her home is so toxic with chemicals that she is vomiting whenever she spends too much time there. She also says her children have all developed a kind of pink eye since the explosion: “I know that I have no home because it is too unsafe. I mean I’m in and out there and it’s too much. You vomit when you’re in there too long. You have numbness, tingling in your mouth. You taste it when you leave. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to get that out of my house or make it safe enough. And honestly if I would try to sell my house I have to disclose that to any buyer.”
Jerry Hughes told Democracy Now! “I don’t feel safe taking my kids into town. Especially to the house. My neighbor right across the street from me literally got diagnosed yesterday with chemical pneumonia.”
Toma Rhodes is co-owner of the Enchanted Salon in East Palestine who told News Nation, “We’re closing again because most of my clientele are from Pennsylvania. No one wants to come near us.”
“East Palestine feels like a war-zone,” says Gia Delisio, who describes getting splitting headaches from the chemical smell hanging over the town. “I’m drinking bottled water even though they told us the water is safe. People are having symptoms in town so that doesn’t seem to be the truth.”
PhD chemist Dr. David Manuta told Headline USA that, “The dirty little secret is they probably took static samples, meaning they didn’t do any mixing; they didn’t do any stirring,” he said. “A static sample is only representative of where it was taken, whereas a mixed sample would stir up all the toxins and be captured in the measurement.”
Among the first authentic journalists with boots on the ground was political strategist Nick Sortor who reported a “sweet smelling chemical smell, like burning rubber” hanging over the town. Residents in neighboring Pennsylvania have documented that chemicals began showing up in their rivers and streams, as evidenced by the strong “butane smell” emitting from them. Louis DeAngelis of Status Coup News interviewed a woman named Therese who lives 11 miles northwest of East Palestine and described an “ozone” smell akin to “burning electronics” following the explosion. Others still have describe the smell lingering in their homes as like “living in a gas station” with “constant smell of burning plastics and chemicals in the air”. Another said the air stinks of “nail polish mixed with gasoline.” And instead of dissipating, the asphyxiating stench only continues to grow more intense.
As of this writing, more than 45,000 animals have been found dead from lethal chemical exposure in and around Ohio following the explosion. The carnage thus far includes fish, frogs, crayfish, birds, snakes, foxes, cats, dogs, horses, rabbits, minks, muskrats, skunks, squirrels, raccoon, deer and elk. Many of these animals dropped dead in areas that are several miles from the blast zone.
On the morning of 27 February, Ben Bergquam with Real America’s Voice News found three dead deer within fifty yards of each other whose lifeless bodies were collapsed near the Ohio River yet undisturbed by bugs and absent any indications of physical trauma. Farmers found their chickens dead in the coops and fish dead in the creeks in the immediate aftermath. Residents’ pets began succumbing to seizures, projectile vomiting, and death. Local fox keeper Taylor Holzer reported sick and dead foxes. Surrounding communities experienced similar problems with their pets. Wildlife carcasses began piling up in at least two of Ohio’s National Forests as well as surrounding counties and townships in the weeks following.
Governor DeWine has attempted to block the independent testing of wildlife but legitimate scientists are finding ways around the blockades to reveal these animals indeed perished with postmortem toxicities that are literally off the charts. “These highly toxic levels are the exact chemicals that were released from East Palestine. Wayne National Forest and Shawnee State Forest in Ohio, are downriver from East Palestine and are two parks where samples are from,” one report reads.
Even the rail workers assigned to the cleanup are falling ill. Jonathon Long, general chairman of the American Rail System Federation of the Teamsters union, wrote a letter stating, among other things, that NFS workers “reported that they continue to experience migraines and nausea, days after the derailment, and they all suspect that they were willingly exposed to these chemicals at the directions of [Norfolk Southern].” Long goes on to describe how the company ignores the pleas of their workers, and how none of those working at the spill site were provided with proper personal protective equipment.
Of all the agencies and organizations present at the disaster site, a private police force appears to have supreme authority. The EPA, Governor, Mayor, Sheriff’s Department, local police and Department of Transportation have universally deferred enforcement authority and roadblock jurisdiction to Norfolk Southern Police Department (NSPD). TheGrey Zonereports on the company’s private police force, and captured footage of the black, unmarked Dodge Durangos complete with lights and a siren being used to patrol the streets of East Palestine:
“The fact that a billion dollar company’s own private police force is patrolling the streets of a tiny village where the company just committed an act of environmental terrorism is troubling, but true. … The department supports 49 field offices, 5 special investigation units, 3 special operations response teams, 12 K9 units, a police communications center and a headquarters in Atlanta.”

HOW DID THIS HAPPEN?
How do a million gallons of cancer-causing toxic chemicals spill and burn up into the atmosphere all at once near a populated area and release a gigantic mushroom cloud of death that blankets the region in pollutants that subsequently kills thousands of animals? The Norfolk Southern train that derailed on its way to Conway, Pennsylvania the night of Friday, 03 February 2023 didn’t have to become the single worst land-based environmental disaster in US history. But instead of taking effort to remove the wrecked tankers full of toxins and disposing of the waste properly, the decision was made to empty the remaining tankers and burn off the toxins directly into the local environment.
According to the National Transportation Safety Board’s preliminary report:
“Train 32N comprised 2 head-end locomotives, 149 railcars, and 1 distributed power locomotive located between railcars 109 and 110. The consist included 20 placarded hazardous materials tank cars transporting combustible liquids, flammable liquids, and flammable gas, including vinyl chloride.”
At approximately 8:12 p.m. surveillance video from an equipment manufacturing plant in Salem, Ohio (20 miles prior to and west of the derailment) captured a light show of sparks and flames showering from beneath car #23. NTSB would later describe these sparks as the telltale sign of an overheated wheel bearing that was ultimately responsible for the derailment.
The NTSB’s report goes on to say that the three employees on board, including an engineer, a conductor and a trainee, tried but failed to stop the train after the wheel bearing overheated. The train passed by multiple “wayside defect detectors” that failed to alert the crew of the danger until it was too late. Workers hit the brakes, but the train weighed 18,000 metric tons and needed many miles of track to decelerate.
“8:54 p.m. local time, eastbound Norfolk Southern Railway (NS) general merchandise freight train 32N derailed 38 cars on main track 1 of NS Fort Wayne Line of the Keystone Division in East Palestine, Ohio. The derailed equipment included 11 tank cars carrying hazardous materials that subsequently ignited, fueling fires that damaged an additional 12 non-derailed railcars.”
A standard DOT111 tanker unit has maximum capacity of 30,000 gallons. A total of 1,109,400 gallons of toxic chemicals were mixed together and ignited, including 5 tankers of Vinyl chloride yielding 150,000 gallons along with an additional 4 tankers of petroleum lube oil, one tanker of Diethylene glycol, one tanker of Ethylene glycol monobutyl ether, one tanker of Ethyl hexyl acelate, one tanker of Butyl acrylate, and two hoppers of polyvinyl. The fiery wreck burned for days releasing chemicals into air, soil and water.
At around 10 p.m. local authorities began evacuating locals living within 1 mile of the derailment site.
By 10:53 p.m. Norfolk finally reported the incident to the National Response Center. They’re supposed to report chemicals spills to federal operators immediately, but chose to delay the call for two hours.
The fire raged on into the following afternoon of Saturday, 04 February. East Palestine Mayor Trent Conaway declared a state of emergency, the NTSB held their first press conference and the EPA detected contaminated water in streams known as Sulphur Run and Leslie Run. Despite the thick, black clouds of smoke emanating from the fire, the Ohio EPA issued a statement claiming no harmful chemicals had been detected in the air.
By Sunday, 05 February, the NTSB held their second press conference and released their drone footage.
The fires continued burning into the night and at 8:30 p.m. Governor DeWine issued an evacuation order for everyone within 1 mile of the derailment. Norfolk planned to intentionally vent and ignite all 5 of the cars carrying vinyl chloride. Residents received alerts on their phones informing them that the fire continued to burn out of control.
Further complicating matters is the fact that the volatile railcars had already been emptied of their contents, meaning there was no longer any risk of explosion. Concerns allegedly grew among officials behind the scenes as vinyl chloride was likely to cause a massive explosion if it continued to increase in temperature. It would later come out that only one of the five tankers containing vinyl chloride was leaking after the derailment, yet officials used explosives to blow holes in all the others after digging a giant pit for the chemical pond so they could set it ablaze all at once. The “forced depressurization” or “controlled venting” of the railcars was performed to prevent the vinyl chloride from catching fire while under pressure and exploding railcar-sized shrapnel. Once this “forced depressurization” was complete, the tanks were no longer at risk of explosion, and the spilled chemicals could have been properly removed. But officials decided to light a match instead.
On Monday, 06 February, officials made the decision to move forward with the chemical explosion often referred to as the “controlled release.” Governor DeWine announced at a press conference that the event would go off at around 3:30 p.m. to get ahead of a forecasted wind storm, but he was suddenly rushed away by security who thought an explosion imminent. Reporters were told they had five minutes to get as far away as possible. Authorities issued a mandatory evacuation for everyone within 1 mile and a ‘shelter in place’ order for everyone within 2. The great big burn finally began at approximately 4:30 p.m. Norfolk told residents over the weekend that they planned to blow the site up in a “controlled breach,” admitting that, “this will be loud and visible.” Governor Mike DeWine said “officers knocked on doors three times to order residents within the one-mile radius of the incident to evacuate because they were moving forward with the controlled release.”
The massive chemical burn releasing a black mushroom cloud that was visible from space was touted as a “success” by Norkfolk’s CEO Alan Shaw. The cloud emitted fallout over four counties and six states, including Ohio, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New York. This is in addition to reports of acid rain which were observed “as far away as Durham, Canada, Boston, Massachusetts, Kentucky and Lafayette, Indiana.”
Authorities lifted the evacuation just 48 hours later on Wednesday 08 February, telling residents it was now safe for them to return home. But as residents attempted to return, they found themselves stuck at the tracks waiting for endless freight trains the pass through. Norfolk trains with cargo shipments belated by the shutdown were now double stacking their loads to make up for lost time. As locals waited patiently in their cars for the trains to pass, it became obvious to many that authorities had lifted the evacuation order prematurely to cater to big business. Since Norfolk couldn’t legally run goods on the rail with an evacuation order in place, the only way to keep the gravy train rolling was to signal the “all clear” even though everyone knew it was a lie.
Multiple sampling sites along the Ohio River began detecting butyl acrylate early on, but state and local officials repeated over and over again that there was “no impact to drinking water” in East Palestine. Residents were repeatedly told the water had been tested and was safe to consume.
One of the strangest moments of the entire episode took place in a school gymnasium containing the Governor’s 5:00 p.m. press conference. News Nation correspondent Evan Lambert was accosted by Major General John Harris of the Ohio National Guard and other military personnel who told him to leave the school gym, even though he’d been invited to the press event as a correspondent for a major network. When he refused to leave, Lambert was forced to the floor, handcuffed in full view of fellow reporters and placed under arrest on charges of disorderly conduct, criminal trespassing and resisting arrest.
On Friday, 10 February, the EPA issued a letter reporting the detection of four toxic chemicals in the air, soil and water. The following Monday, 13 February, Norfolk Southern’s CEO Alan Shaw publicized a letter pledging “a $1 million community support fund as a down payment on our commitment to help rebuild”. But two days later neither Shaw nor anyone from his company were present for the 15 February Town Hall meeting to discuss the very disaster their company had caused. And as the excuse for their conspicuous absence from the meeting, Norfolk actually professed themselves as the victim with the following statement: “Unfortunately, after consulting with community leaders, we have become increasingly concerned about the growing physical threat to our employees.” Though there would certainly be justification for it, there is no record of any threats whatsoever to Norfolk employees.
On Thursday, 16 February, both Governor DeWine and the Ohio EPA confirmed the detection of “a chemical plume of butyl acrylate” moving down the Ohio River toward Virginia. The EPA confirmed the plume had entered the Ohio River Basin, which is home to 25 million people. Federal EPA Administrator Michael Regan told residents: “All families need to know that they are safe.” That same day, Ohio senator J.D. Vance visited a local stream affected by the spill called Leslie’s Run, and shot video of the bubbling chemicals popping out of the water in rainbow-vision.
On the morning of Friday, 17 February,Cincinnati officials announced they were shutting off water intake from the Ohio River due to contamination concerns – an action that the Northern Kentucky Water District had preemptively implemented on 10 February.
Following his strongly worded letter, “Pothole Pete” Buttigieg finally showed up for the first time on Thursday, 23 February. Pausing in the middle of a statement, “Pothole Pete” unironically admitted to the press team that he’d lost his train of thought. That same day, the NTSB chairwoman Jennifer Homendy publicly stated the disaster was “100% preventable” She went on to say, “We call things accidents. There is no accident.”
The week concluded with a spirited Town Hall meeting hosted by Erin Brockovich on the evening of Friday, 24 February. “I can’t tell you how many communities feel that these moments are the biggest gaslight of their life,” she said. “Because you experienced it. You have symptoms. But you’re going to be told it’s safe. You’re going to be told not to worry. Well that’s just rubbish.”
BLATANT CONFLICTS OF INTEREST
EPA officials and the Governor were telling locals that the water was safe to drink when the Ohio Department of Natural Resources had simultaneously reported that an estimated 3,500 fish in nearby creeks and rivers had died instantly from chemical contamination, the total of which has since grown to more than 43,700.
Governor DeWine told Wolf Blitzer with a straight face on CNN, “There’s people who are reporting symptoms and we don’t know what those causes were. Many of them believe that it came about because of the train derailment.”
Dr. Bruce Vanderhoof is the bow-tie wearing Director of the Ohio Department of Health who said at a press conference in East Palestine, “The symptoms that they’re describing have a whole variety of potential sources.” He further patronized the locals by saying, “I wouldn’t be walking around the community if I didn’t think it was safe,” to which he was met with audible ‘booing’. After several moments of vociferous backlash from the crowd, Vanderhoof finally shrugged and said, “I don’t know what more I can do to assure you all,” to which a woman in audience immediately shouted, “Stop lying to us!”
How can authorities declare “the air and water are clean” when everyone is so obviously sick from the chemicals that were spilled and burned? -when the creeks are visibly contaminated? -when the air is obviously toxic? Furthermore, how can authorities declare “all clear” without sufficient data to do so?
Jessica Helpy asked rhetorically, “Why am I having this headache? Why do I feel so lightheaded that I need to sit down when I’m showering? It’s not okay for people to be here right now. I know that the evacuation order has been lifted but the air quality is not okay. … The way this is being handled right now, in my opinion, is unethical. It’s immoral.”
Gaslighting is defined as “a psychological manipulation of a person usually over an extended period of time that causes the victim to question the validity of their own thoughts, perceptions of reality, or memories and typically leads to confusion, loss of confidence and self-esteem, uncertainty of one’s emotional or mental stability, and a dependency on the perpetrator.”
Nick Sortor observed early on that, “People of the town don’t know what to do and feel abandoned by the government.” He went on to describe how the locals fear the disaster will be totally covered up. They’ve been told everything is safe even though they’re vomitingblood. When they call their local officials they’re given the run around and recordings. The clinic set up by Governor DeWine has overwhelmingly minimized their symptoms, with clinicians actually telling residents that their skin rashes were likely due to stress. Additionally, the clinic had absolutely no way of testing for any contaminants, nor any doctors in its employ. It does not prescribe treatments or provide diagnoses.
The damage control response by authorities and officials smacks of Flint, Michigan. In Flint, Obama attempted to assure the locals that their leaded water was safe by pretending to drink a glass of tap at a press conference while making a crack about doing his own stunts. In Ohio, Governor DeWine and EPA Administrator Regan attempted to assure locals their rainbow water was safe by pretending to drink a glass of tap in a resident’s kitchen while making a crack about how “good” it tastes. In Flint EPA officials were caught perverting and falsifying water testing results by telling locals to run their taps for long periods before testing. In Ohio EPA officials continue denying what everyone feels, smells and tastes by abdicating their testing duties to controversial contracting firms that fail to test for relevant toxins. Flint was ultimately denied FEMA support because their emergency wasn’t one of natural causes, and the same thing happened in Ohio.
Attorney Michael Barasch, who advocated on behalf of 9/11 illness victims, told News Nation,
“When I heard the EPA tell everybody, ‘Oh don’t worry, the air in East Palestine is safe to breathe,’ shivers went down my spine. I distinctly remember Christine Todd Whitman using those exact same words 21 years ago… Well I gotta tell ya: it wasn’t safe. We know now from NIOSH [National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health] that 69 cancers have been linked to the World Trade Center toxins. Not a day goes by without two of my clients dying.…They’re treating us like children, like we can’t handle the news.”
Ohio Senator J.D. Vance disputed the declaration as well. “People say that the air is clean,” Vance explained. “I would like to believe that that’s true. I also have been here for all of three hours and it doesn’t smell great to me… I took a stick and I stuck it in the bed of the creek and pulled it along and chemicals bubbled out of the ground.”
The EPA sunk as low as holding a youth town hall meeting where officials told teenage kids the water and air were completely safe, in spite of the glaring fact that the school drinking fountains were all locked up to prevent their use. They sunk the lie even deeper, telling teens to encourage other students to come into town to play sporting events.
In mid February when Federal EPA Administrator Michael Regan was asked if he would allow his children to bathe in the water, he responded, “As a parent, I would.” Regan told residents he would even raise his children in East Palestine. He went on to condescendingly remark, “I trust science.”
Courtney Miller, who lives in a property adjacent to the contaminated creek, told News Nation, “I trust science, too. But you can’t find what you’re not looking for. They’re not looking for the dioxins… So they’re not testing for what they need to be testing for is why they’re saying that it’s fine. And they just don’t want to hear it because they’re trying to save money.”
A few weeks later Administrator Regan had changed his tune completely, saying that as a parent, he definitely would not allow his children to play anywhere near the creeks in East Palestine. Nick Sortor asked Regan, “We’ve seen the rainbow sheen, all these chemicals popping up from the bottom of the streams that these kids used to play in. Would you allow your kids anywhere near these streams right now?”
“I would not,” Regan responded. “I’m the father of a nine year old. I think we have to all agree that we wish this accident didn’t occur. The accident occurred, and as a result two of our creeks and our streams have pollution in them.”
And after a month of repeatedly assuring residents their town was safe, Governor Mike DeWine finally admitted what everyone had already known from the very beginning: “The whole goal here is to make the community safe and it can’t happen overnight. We can’t get all the stuff outta here overnight.”
In spite of his verbal commitments to “make the community safe,” DeWine remains reticent to officially declare a state of emergency. Perhaps because doing so would upset his donors, for whom a disaster declaration would cost the “legal primacy” to call all the shots as they’ve come to expect.
JUST FOLLOWING ORDERS?
We’ve all been told that the railroad company had to light a match to keep the vinyl chloride from exploding, because vinyl chloride is volatile with a boiling point of 7.9 degrees Fahrenheit. So they had to detonate it in a “controlled release” to prevent an explosion. But there was already a huge fire that burned for days. Wouldn’t a deliberate effort to further ignite it all then raise the temperature well above 7.9 degrees, making a subsequent explosion inevitable?
The fact remains that the volatile railcars had already been emptied of their contents, meaning there was no longer any risk of explosion.
Retired Fire Chief Sil Caggiano is considered one of the most knowledgeable experts on hazardous materials in the area. When interviewed he told reporters straightaway, “We basically nuked a town with chemicals so we could get a railroad open.”Caggiano went on to explain that Norfolk Southern “did not have to blow up the chemicals and only did so because it was the cheapest option.” And the trains were not only back on schedule within 48 hours of the disaster, they were also double stacked as the railroad attempted to make up for lost time.
Multiple reports confirm that firefighters had no clue what they were up against because the railroad hadn’t effectively communicated the severity of the situation. Had fire crews been informed they were dealing with a chemical fire involving several volatile compounds, they would have employed foam instead of water and the situation could have been contained.
After realizing they’d made the situation worse, fire crews withdrew and waited for the cavalry to show. Twenty-four hours later, 78 departments had responded, but everyone ultimately deferred to the company’s authority and Norfolk Southern insisted that the vinyl chloride tanks constituted a ticking time bomb – even though they’d already made the decision to empty all five tankers. So they made their choice, and a deadly mushroom cloud formed a nightmare chemical weapons factory in the sky that rained toxins into the environment sending flocks of dead birds plummeting to the earth.
Local resident Kathy Dyke told reporters, “I honestly feel that the police department, the fire department, all the first responders, they don’t have the answers to give us because I don’t think they know.”
Since chemistry knowledge is not exactly common, companies can take advantage of collective ignorance about the subject to present their feeble contradictory arguments. We’ve all heard about the five railcars of vinyl chloride because the volatility associated with that chemical is essential to the official story. Because vinyl chloride boils at 7.9 degrees Fahrenheit, we’re told these railcars were likely to explode. But the premise that the potential cause of a catastrophic explosion would have been heat seems self-contradictory since igniting a burn makes it more likely to explode because it raises the temperature. And again, the inconvenient fact that the tankers were empty when they finally lit the match means there wasn’t actually any danger of an explosion.
Norfolk Southern claim to have detected rising temperature readings in one of the pressurized railcars. If they’re telling the truth, the situation threatened to release a tremendous amount of chemical energy all at once which would have probably wiped East Palestine off the map instantly. But we know that Norfolk Southern sought permission from the feds to depressurize the tanks. Once the tanks were depressurized, the threat of imminent explosion was over because empty tanks cannot explode. So Norfolk are telling a twisted truth, which is another way of saying that they’re lying. It goes without saying that the company had much to gain by burning the evidence, which also allowed them to reopen the track as quickly as possible.
TESTING FOR WHAT?
Norfolk Southern’s CEO Alan Shaw defended his “safety culture” to PBS News Hour, insisting to viewers that the air and water are clean because “the science” says so:
“We’ve stood up a lot of testing. Within an hour of the derailment we had air testing. Within a couple hours of the derailment we had water testing. There is independent testing going on right now at the Ohio EPA and with local health officials. You know, there’s been hundreds of tests and there have been thousands of data points and they’ve all come back with the same result that says the air and the water are clean. … We’re extremely focused on safety. And over the long term we’ve seen reductions in derailments and hazardous material releases and in injuries. This is clearly a situation where our safety culture and our investments in safety did not prevent this accident.”
Peter DeCarlo is an associate professor of environmental health from Johns Hopkins who appeared on ABCThis Week to reveal that, “The monitoring equipment they’re using to determine things are safe doesn’t give us chemical specificity – it doesn’t tell us what chemicals are present. It just says they’re below some level. There’s plenty of chemicals that can be created from that fire that can be toxic at much lower levels.” DeCarlo went on to describe how EPA monitoring data is from handheld monitors not designed to measure outside air quality.
Elected officials like Governor DeWine relied on biased and faulty data from industry contractors in making statements assuring residents that water and air were safe for human consumption. In a blatant conflict of interest, said testing was performed by several consulting firms on Norfolk Southern’s payroll – alongside and in impersonation of EPA officials inside residents’ homes – and the samples they utilized to carry out their so-called “testing” were deeply compromised. Probably deliberately so.
Chris DeAngelo of the Huffington Post reported that a company subcontractor called AECOM improperly preserved and mishandled municipal water samples rendering test results utterly useless.
Norfolk also hired the Center of Toxicology and Environmental Health (CTEH) and Tetra Tech. Both of these companies have an awful track record, and have been caught falsifying test information in other major US disasters including the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Tetra Tech specifically is guilty of the biggest Eco Fraud case in US history.
CTEH has a history of minimizing the effects of environmental disasters to protect their corporate clients. According to the New York Times,“They’re paid to say everything’s okay.” Chemical corporations consistently use this company’s “findings” to assure us that there is never any cause for alarm. CTEH was accused of mishandling data related to the hurricane Katrina oil spill, covering up a coal ash spill in Tennessee, mismanaging Florida’s drywall crisis, and whitewashing the 2010 BP oil spill. And the last time Norfolk Southern found themselves in hot water, after a derailment in Graniteville, South Carolina released 90 tons of chlorine gas, killing 9 and injuring 500, guess who was hired to manage the PR nightmare? That’s right. CTEH.
A fox guarding the hen house is a great way to exert control over a crime scene so corporate fat cats can have their cake and eat it too. Numerous reports of children projectile vomiting immediately following the “controlled release” can be instantly nullified by so-called “experts” who use the public relations spin of tobacco science to hypnotize their audience into believing that there’s nothing to see here. Tetra Tech and CTEH are both hatchet-man operations hired by polluters to cover their tracks.
Residents have observed private contractors testing for the wrong chemicals and cleaning with disinfectants rather than neutralizing the chemical agents.
Robert Bowcock is an environmental investigator working with Erin Brockovich. Standing near a creek in East Palestine, Bob described the response as “pathetic” and “out of control”:
“What’s been the response? The railroad sent in a clean up crew who came in with commercial grade organic Lysol to disinfect the homes. That’s about as pathetic as it gets. The response is absolutely out of control. Nothing is going right in any way, shape or form. If you look behind me here they’re actually aerating a creek. Where do you think those chemicals are going in an aeration process? They are literally going back up in to the air and recontaminating these people. This is not something that happened overnight. This is something that’s ongoing. They are literally taking the chemicals from this creek and reintroducing them into the air, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.”
These contractors also reassured locals by announcing they’ve not detected vinyl chloride in the air. This point is moot, of course, given that vinyl chloride transforms into a whole host of other chemicals when burned. “It’s not just what was in the tanker cars,” explained Eric F. Coppolino of PlanetWaves FM. “It’s what happens when they burn and combine. This may be the largest dioxin plume in world history. I know of no more serious release, ever.”
Dioxins are a group of toxic compounds classified as Persistent Organic Pollutants, meaning they don’t break down the way other things do. They can cause cancer, reproductive harm, birth defects, developmental harm, immune damage and hormonal imbalances. Dioxins also bioaccumulate and remain in the children and grandchildren of those affected because they alter DNA.
Once again, the EPA swooped in to wreck the day, first telling locals that it was “too early to test for dioxins” before imagining up their next great excuse. The EPA now they say they can’t test for dioxins because they don’t have a baseline to compare it to. Even though the EPA have themselves set a threshold for safe dioxin exposure at a toxicity equivalence of .7 pictograms per kilograms of body weight per day. So if the EPA has set an allowable limit, why won’t they simply test for it and see if it’s above their own toxicity threshold?
If officials admitted that the “magic dust” that fell from the sky as far east as Connecticut in the days following Ohio’s chemical nuke was 1) poisonous and 2) related in any way to the East Palestine derailment, the potential liability claims from millions of people in multiple states could cripple their profit engine. Meteorologists have insisted that the white ash that fell from the sky in New England wasn’t from the chemical explosion, but from a dust storm in Oklahoma. Noting that the dust had settled on Philadelphia, AccuWeather reporter Bill Deger chose to find the silver lining by telling his audience that the atmospheric particulates made sunsets “more photogenic.”
“Corbin and his wife returned to their house on Feb. 9, which was his 73rd birthday. During an initial phone conversation, the EPA said the ash on Corbin’s property was not from the derailment.”
Government officials have deferred to Norfolk Southern’s line, telling residents that if they want to front the $4,500 to test for dioxins they will be reimbursed eventually. Once again the industry doesn’t have to prove that it’s safe, but those injured by its pillaging must prove that it’s dangerous. Even if the victims are financially capable of leaping through such prohibitive hoops to prove on their own dime that specific chemical compounds exist in their homes, the industry knows they won’t be able to prove these contaminants weren’t present before the derailment.
DIOXIN FACTOR SPELLS DOOM FOR NORTH AMERICAN FOOD PRODUCTION
According to the Health RangerMike Adams, dioxins eclipse the toxicity of pesticides, glyphosate, lead, arsenic and even mercury. “Nothing comes close to the toxicity of dioxins, other than something like VX nerve gas, or Xyklon B, or Cesium 137 radiation,” he says. “That might be comparable. That’s how dangerous dioxins are…. One quadrillionth of a gram exposure to dioxin can yield negative effects. … It’s toxic at femtograms.”
Persistent Bioaccumulative Toxins (PBT) like dioxin become more concentrated as they move up the food chain causing increasing rates of cancer, spontaneous abortion and deformities. They do not degrade or vanish or dilute over time. Tens of thousands of farms are directly affected by the contaminated waterways and toxic airborne fallout from East Palestine, including the largest Amish farm in North America.
Significant percentages of America’s corn, soy, wheat, beef, diary and pork are sourced from Ohio. 80% of world’s livestock grain is irrigated by the watershed that’s now contaminated. Likewise, 25% of America’s fish live in that waterway. Even if the farmers in this area decide to continue working their land, this may prove to be a Silent Spring scenario if insect pollinators fail to survive the contamination. We can see evidence of this in the recent glut of dead wildlife around East Palestine that aren’t being devoured by insects. The largest Amish farm in North America, if not the world, may no longer be viable after the contamination incurred by the chemical nuke. How much of the northern hemisphere was affected remains an open question.
Likewise, the extent of the damage to the regional watersheds continues to unfold. At ground zero the drainage ditches running alongside the railroad tracks flow directly into the nearest creek which then runs through three other towns before entering the Ohio River on its way into the Mississippi River and toward the Gulf of Mexico. The aforementioned drainage ditches were blocked with makeshift dams following the derailment, which have repeatedly overflown into the rivers following heavy rain. Some officials have warned communities along the waterway to cease swimming in it.
PREMONITIONS, PREDICTIVE PROGRAMMING OR PRE-DRILL EXERCISES?
It seems strange enough that on 2/3/’23 train 32N derailed after car #23 sparked off the track igniting and damaging a total of 23 railcars. But this story goes completely off the rails with the combination of coincidental occurrences leading up to the event, including a Netflix movie that seemed to predict the catastrophe, an experimental health identification program introduced specifically to the affected town, and an Orwellian omission of information by the Center for Disease Control and prevention.
A Netflix movie called White Noisereleased in September of 2022 (just five months prior to the real-world event)just so happens to feature a train crash with chemical tankers that stack up, catch fire, and explode, releasing a “toxic airborne event” that forces locals to evacuate. White Noise was even filmed in the same area, a few miles from ground zero. And some East Palestineresidents played as extras in this movie that predicted their own future quagmire. Should it surprise us to learn that the co-founder and original CEO of Netflix is Marc Bernays Randolph, the great nephew of propaganda “godfather” Edward Bernays?
Then there was that mysterious plane crash outside of Little Rock, Arkansas that killed everyone on board. And everyone on board, including the pilot, just happened to be employees of CTEH on their way to Ohio, but not East Palestine, Ohio. The CTEH crew were on their way to Oakwood Village, Ohio to assist in the investigation of the “unrelated” metal plant explosion that occurred there just days after the East Palestine chemical nuke. Then there was the “unrelated” Norfolk derailment outside of Detroit that involved hazardous materials. And the 09 March derailment in Alabama that took place during CEO Alan Shaw’s appearance before Congress on the event in East Palestine. The list of “coincidences” goes on and on, in part because the US is averaging a major chemical spill every two days, according to The Guardian.
“WHO IS JOHN GALT?”
This story reads like a parody directly from the pages of Atlas Shrugged. America’s modern freight trains remain outfitted with laughably outdated, Civil War-era air braking systems. It is atop this antiquated technology from 1868 that we’re running longer trains with heavier loads at faster speeds. All of this acceleration hurries along with fewer employees and less maintenance. While train loads got longer and heavier, the railroad work force shrunk by nearly 40% over the last six years. As cutbacks to the railroad labor force intensified, executives chose to fill the void by outsourcing the work to subcontractors.
Rail workers attempted to warn the American people about this very disaster potential and were organizing a strike in the autumn of 2022. Then a legislation came down from the Biden White House on 02 December 2022 preemptively declaring the strike illegal and forcing workers to get back to work in the unsafe conditions they were protesting against.
Locomotive engineer Ron Kaminkow is General Secretary of Rail Workers United, who organized the strike. Appearing on The Jimmy Dore Show, Kaminkow said,
“There was a huge huge pent up anger and frustration that has been building for at least two decades now. Draconian attendance policies, massive furloughs, layoffs, job consolidations, all of us going to work knowing we don’t have the proper tools to do the job, lack of maintenance, lack of inspection. I know signal maintainers and car inspectors that are just furious and very demoralized with the inability to do the job as they were trained to do it and as they understand that the law says they are to do it, to say nothing of rail carrier policy and procedure. But there’s all this pressure from the top to cut corners. Don’t inspect. Don’t maintain. We don’t have enough staff to do the job properly.”
Senior employees charged with preventing derailments have all left and their positions were eliminated by Norfolk Southern. The company also fought against the implementation of their own revolutionary “electronic braking” technology. According to the Upper Echelon youtube channel:
“In a 2007 investor document, Norfolk Southern actually bragged about their electronic braking system. They used it as a method of exciting their shareholders and stated that the technology was so safe it would soon be included in dozens more of their trains. Flash forward, not so much. Even though they admitted that Electronically Controlled Pneutmatic (ECP) brakes could decrease the track needed to stop a train by as much as 60%, they fought the government so this massively superior and safer technology would not be required in trains.”
Democracy Now! featured Matthew Cunningham-Cook of Lever Newswho stated, “Norfolk Southern has one of the worst safety records on the rails.” He went on to say, “Fines and class actions lawsuits are ultimately a drop in the bucket compared to the extraordinary profit that these railroads collect from their workforce that’s overworked and in large part burnt out.”
According to the Rail Workers Union: “Wall Street backed policies such as ‘precision-scheduled railroading’ have made the US rail system more dangerous … prioritizing profits over safety and health, cutting maintenance, equipment inspection and personnel in all crafts while increasing the average train size to three miles or more.”
The industry’s one-track mind chugging on nothing but dollars and dividends has laid off 33% of their workforce in the last 5 years while increasing shareholder payouts by 4,500%. Their Wall Street owners (Blackrock, Vanguard, JP Morgan and Wells Fargo) want to go completely automated with driverless trains and ditch the remaining employees. The only reason there are still crew members on board is that the industry hasn’t figured out how to automate their jobs away yet. Never mind the fact that the very train that derailed in East Palestine broke down just days prior to the derailment, yet employees concerns about the length and weight of Norfolk’s trains went ignored. Another classic example of a large corporation exploiting weak regulations to transport dangerous chemicals on the cheap until inevitably something broke down and it blew up in their faces. Except it won’t be their faces responsible for the cleanup, because they can just declare bankruptcy and put it all on the taxpayers.
LEGAL ACTIONS
Norfolk Southern can’t seem to keep track of all the chemicals involved in and released from the chemical nuke they unleashed. As reported by the Daily Mail, “Independent testing by Texas A&M and Carnegie Mellon University published last week found that the air in East Palestine contains ‘higher than normal’ concentrations of nine potentially harmful chemicals” including acrolein, benzene, Vinyl chloride, butadiene, naphthalene, o-Xylene, trichloroethylene, trichloroethane and p-Xylene. This is in addition to the Vinyl chloride, Butyl acrylate, Ethylhexyl acrylate, Ethylene glycol monobutyl ether, and Isobutylene that spilled into the ground and contaminated the watershed. It is also in addition to the formaldehyde, phosgene, Hydrogen chloride and dioxins produced as a result of the burn.
Independent Journalist Millie Weaver identifies how the potential defendants aren’t necessarily who you’d expect. “We’ve had a lot of focus on Norfolk Southern, but according to a source I spoke with that’s an incident commander, they said if it’s a wheel bearing failure, that means this is going to be the fault of the car owner.” Weaver revealed that railcar #23 carrying polypropylene was owned by Aristech Chemical Corporation, and Aristech has been a wholly owned subsidiary of Sunocosince November of 2000 when they purchased it from Mitsubishi for $695 million.
Some liability may fall on those tied up with the circumstances of the derailment, but what about the decision to nuke the region with an unnecessary but cost-saving explosion?
Big business has known since the 1970’s that vinyl chloride causes a rare form of liver cancer known as angiosarcoma as well as lymphoma, leukemia, brain cancer, lung cancer and neurological symptoms like dizziness and lightheadedness. According to the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, “Vinyl chloride in the air breaks down in a few days resulting in the formation of several other chemicals including hydrochloric acid, formaldahyde and carbon dioxide.”
But of the many byproducts created by burning vinyl chloride one is hydrogen chloride which bonded with water in the atmosphere and became the hydrochloric acid that damaged property throughout the region when it came down in the form of acid rain. Another is phosgene, which was employed in the First World War as a chemical weapon that induces vomiting and breathing difficulties. Since Norfolk Southern and its obedient accomplices deliberately released chemical weapons, perhaps they’re liable for action under the Geneva Convention.
And how about hiding evidence in other states under the cover of darkness? Neither Texas nor Michigan officials knew about the shipments of contaminated fire-fighting water to their states via a company called Texas Molecular. And while corporate media could have helped make relevant announcements, they instead got sidetracked with war propaganda and UFO stories. And when they were finally forced to give it some air time, mainstream broadcasts universally minimized the disaster and repeated what the industry told them to say. And the inter-agency cover up didn’t end there. Even the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Air Resources Lab modeled the distribution of particles from the East Palestine train derailment before suddenly taking them down without reason.
When the media are owned by the same companies that own Norfolk Southern, we’re beyond the need to break up the conglomerates who exert control over the politicians through the legalized bribery of campaign contributions. So it shouldn’t be surprising to learn that the Biden Administration is currently siding with Norfolk Southern in a case against a former rail worker now pending before the Supreme Court that could allow corporations to restrict where people can file suit against them, including the victims of the East Palestine disaster.
In 2012 a Norfolk Southern train derailed in Polesburo, New Jersey spilling 23,000 gallons of vinyl chloride that they didn’t set on fire, and it still killed nine people. Even after injuring an additional 500, the company was allowed to continue chugging along. Business as usual.
Emily Wright is the development director for River Valley Organizing and lives near East Palestine. Appearing on Democracy Now! Emily told viewers,
“The most important thing is that this is not a conspiracy theory. This is Standard Operating Procedure for Norfolk Southern. They have $70 million in safety violations since 2000 and $21 million in environmental. 25 million Americans live on an oil train blast zone. … We told them 10 years ago. We told the EPA that bomb trains, this was going to happen. We had several collaborative organizations appeal to the EPA. And it happened.”
CONCLUSIONS
There’s little question that the ongoing catastrophe in East Palestine represents a unique humanitarian disaster. With residents left to fend for themselves as their children puke up blood, outrage is growing. This may be the biggest and most obvious government cover up Americans have witnessed yet. The only reason the evacuation was lifted was to get the rail road open and get the money flowing again. And they continue to lie to keep the flow going. Industry makes statements, politicians parrot those lines, and talking heads in the media follow suit.
This is what corporate terrorism looks like. Elected officials are corrupted and compromised and co-opted until they’re powerless to respond to disasters caused by wealthy industry donors, ensuring an inevitable death wave follows – for the plebs. It’s no accident this wreck was minimized by a governor who receives tens of thousands of dollars in campaign contributions from Norfolk Southern. The longer they drag their feet and deny the truth the more they maximize the damage to the region. Those affected will continue to suffer because daddy government can’t respond so long as his owners are holding him by the purse strings. That’s why there are no signs posted anywhere in East Palestine indicating to passers by that anything might be askew.
Elected officials can choose to declare a state of emergency to deploy government resources to this disaster. But if no state of emergency is declared, the EPA has no jurisdiction. If no state of emergency is declared, NorfolkSouthern enjoys complete legal primacy over the situation. What could be a more obvious “state of emergency” than an act of terrorism that directly impacts millions of Americans? Critical infrastructure was again weaponized against Americans, but whereas New Yorkers were traumatized by commercial aircraft, Ohioans were traumatized by a commercial rail.
Stokely Carmichael has observed that, “In order for nonviolence to work, your opponent must have a conscience.” If the fight is never taken to the owners, nothing will ever change. Instead of blowing off steam in a rigged political system, people could choose to pull back the curtain and meet the wizard for themselves. Alan Shaw is the CEO of Norfolk Southern, but he doesn’t own it.
Larry Fink is the CEO of Blackrock Investment Group, who in-turn own Norfolk Southern and exert a great deal of control over what executives like Alan Shaw are allowed to do. These companies spend millions of dollars bribing politicians to act as their public relations liaisons and millions more to media groups who parrot the bureaucrats. A government complicit to it’s corporate owners cannot respond to the people.
While there are actions we can take to cleanse our bodies (activated charcoal, Bentonite clay, Zeolite powder, matcha powder, broccoli powder, chlorophyll, etc.) and the environment (shelf mushrooms, poplar trees, etc.) of toxic chemicals, stopping the unnecessary introduction of these substances into the environment preempts the need for such efforts. Those interested in getting society back on track would do well to note that seeking political solutions to these problems will result in more of the same, as it always has. Unless there is some kind of concerted effort to outlaw corporations entirely – as was the case for a good deal of America’s history – they will only grow more powerful. There’s been talk of nationalizing the rails in a similar way to how the highway system is nationalized. But without a general strike or similar action that thoroughly inconveniences the captains of industry, all that talk is just blowing off steam. In the first 10 weeks of 2022 several other trains carrying hazardous materials derailed at the same time as a plethora of industrial explosions, including incidents in Detroit, Springfield,Cleveland,Bedford, La Salle, Kissimmee.
Then a Montana Rail Link train derailed entering a tunnel along the Clark Fork River near Paradise, Montana on 02 April 2023.
Meanwhile, more than 12,000 freight trains continue to screech along America’s rusty rails each and every day carrying hazardous materials. News Nation reports that 770 of Norfolk Southern’s cars carrying hazardous materials were involved in accidents during 2022. It begs the question, what exactly does CEO Alan Shaw mean when he tells Congress, “We’re gonna make our safety culture the best in the industry”? That the US averages a major chemical spill every two days and “Pothole Pete’s” admission that America averages three derailments every day should spark concerns. Because the next bomb train is coming to a neighborhood near you.
Assassination Plots, Stolen Valor and Domestic Terrorism in Mineral County, Montana
When Angela Mastrovito relocated to Missoula to search for her missing daughter, she never expected an assassin would come to her and confess to a contract on her life. Nor did she expect the hit man to concede that her execution had been ordered by her son-in-law, David Michael Barsotti. It would prove the first of many unwelcome surprises for a grieving mother to endure along the journey of finding her missing daughter. But most surprising of all was law enforcement’s indifference to evidence of domestic violence, stolen valor, domestic terrorism, cyberstalking, witness tampering, aggravated assault, conspiracy to commit arson, and conspiracy to commit murder.
Angela was babysitting grandchildren at her Virginia home on Tuesday 20 July 2021 when she got the text from her son-in-law, David Barsotti, about her daughter’s disappearance: “Hey mom. Police have come over. They say Rebekah’s missing and tell me an old fling allegedly made the 911 call.”
According to authorities, 33 year-old Rebekah Grace Barsotti and her dog, Cerberus were last seen on 20 July 2021 at 2:15 PM after a visit to the Town Pump gas station in Superior, Montana. Angela was told that Rebekah’s vehicle, a Silver 2014 Volkswagen Passat, had been recovered from an Interstate 90 rest stop, that Rebekah’s license and personal effects had been recovered from the nearby shoreline of the Clark Fork River, and that Rebekah herself was last seen wearing shorts and a blue tank top. Authorities alleged they were alerted to the scene following a 911 call that was placed by an “Oregon family” passing through Montana.
Angela and Gerry Mastrovito
Angela and her husband Gerry sprung into action and relocated to Missoula to search for Rebekah. They knew that Rebekah had been trying to escape her abusive marriage and was soon due to appear in court to press charges of domestic violence against her estranged husband. They knew that she’d left her marital home in Superior and relocated to a Missoula area rental to turn over a new leaf. They also knew that Rebekah feared for her safety because of the long-established history of violent behavior by her husband, including an incident where David purportedly shot her television with a firearm during an argument in 2016. The Mastrovitos were also aware that David had threatened to shoot his wife’s hands off, prompting a domestic violence arrest just weeks prior to Rebekah’s sudden disappearance.
What they didn’t know was the extent to which local area law enforcement would go to cover for, and obstruct investigation into, David’s criminal activity. Based on security footage they still won’t release, following a 911 call they still won’t let anyone listen to, during ongoing domestic violence litigation they’ve always refused to acknowledge, authorities claimed Rebekah Barsotti was last seen at the Superior Town Pump, and insist she drowned in the Clark Fork River soon thereafter. But anomalies abound around every detail of the official story spun by law enforcement. Among those anomalies, how David Barsotti slipped through the cracks time and time again when the probable cause to investigate him seemed overwhelming. The evidence makes it clear that this situation wouldn’t be as extraordinary as it is without David Barsotti’s cozy relationships with local law enforcement, who refused to ever consider him a possible suspect.
Rebekah and her dog Cerberus
Rebekah Grace Rose was born on 28 December 1987 in Fredericksburg, VA and raised in Partlow, VA. After moving to Montana in 2007, she married David Barsotti in September of 2015. The marriage was apparently rocky from the start, according to family members. The couple separated in 2016 after David shot her television, but reunited a short time later. Rebekah frequently told family members that the marriage seemed to be on the verge of ending, but would soon thereafter say they were “going to try to work it out.” This cycle repeated several times, and often included Rebekah being kicked out of the marital home for periods of time, sleeping in hotel rooms on a regular basis.
Rebekah and David Barsotti
On the morning of 09 March 2021, just two months before Rebekah disappeared, she called the 911 dispatch in Superior, Montana. Dispatcher Anna May with the Mineral County Sheriff’s Office, received the call at about 12:30 AM and asked, “911. What is your emergency?”
Rebekah replied, “Hi. My husband is threatening my well-being if I do not leave the house that I own. … He has threatened to shoot my hands so I can’t call you the next time he threatens me.” She further tells the dispatcher that David had been drinking and popping pills, that there were weapons in the house and that she feared for her safety.
Mineral County Sheriff Deputy Patrick Nobles was dispatched to the Barsotti’s marital home at 63 Bucko Lane, but before he could get there Rebekah called 911 again to report that David had gone into the house. Upon arrival at the scene, deputy Nobles found Rebekah Barsotti waiting for him outside the residence and got her take of events. Deputy Nobles then entered the home. In the body cam footage of the incident Deputy Nobles can be heard calling out to David, and David calling back to him from the bedroom. Nobles finds David in his room, in bed, “under his blankets, fully clothed, with an empty holster on his hip, handcuffs in his pocket, and weapons in his bedroom,” according to Mineral County prosecutors. After Nobles asked David to get out of bed, Barsotti admitted that a verbal argument had taken place between him and his wife, but when asked about whether he had threatened to shoot Rebekah’s’ hands off, denied it outright.
Deputy Patrick Nobles
Nobles asked him, “So did you intend to shoot her hands off?”
David responded. “No! What the hell? Did she say that?”
Nobles said, “Yeah.”
David continued, “Dude, no. Alright. So maybe…dude, no. No. I never. I have no recollection of that at all.”
Nobles asked, “You have no memory of that?”
David said, “None. None.”
Deputy Patrick Nobles ultimately did the right thing, and made the decision to detain David Barsotti in the Mineral County Jail, where he stayed for three nights on charges of Partner/Family Member Assault (PFMA). When breathalyzer was administered at booking, David Barsotti blew a whopping 0.365 BAC. A Standing Order Of No Contact between David and Rebekah also went into motion from this incident.
The next day, on 10 March 2021, Rebekah recorded 2 videos that have since sent chills up the spines of the internet sleuthing community. From Rebekah’s iPhone we see her park her car, chamber a round in her pistol, step out from the car and unlock her front door before entering and clearing her house room by room. She can be heard clearly saying, “If Carlos is here, he’s here to kill me.” She also finds a pistol in the sheets of their bed. Recorded less than 24 hours after the documented domestic violence arrest, this video evidence illustrates how scared Rebekah was to return home.
The day after that, on 11 March 2021, Rebekah was hired in Missoula as a server at a cocktail lounge called PLONK MISSOULA. A month later she’d completed her move into a Missoula area rental. After years of telling her family she was ready to flee this abusive marriage, David’s arrest prompted Rebekah to finally take the leap. As the probability of divorce seemed more likely, so grew the specter of asset division and the sale of their marital home in Superior.
Then the death threats began.
On 04 June 2021 Rebekah sent a text to her mother at 9:40 PM that’s since been made public on the Find Rebekah Barsotti facebook page. Rebekah writes, “For the record, he has threatened to beat me, shoot me, kill my dog, burn the house down, drive my truck into the river….There is zero reason for me to be compliant.” Both Mineral and Missoula County Sheriff’s Departments were made aware of these conversations.
Then on 02 July 2021, something happened on the western edge of the Missoula valley that has since baffled investigators. It seems Rebekah was walking her Belgian Malinois, Cerberus, at Council Groves State Park when some kind of assault took place that involved rocks being thrown at her. Upon returning to her vehicle she discovered the windshield had been smashed. Rebekah’s iPhone recorded pictures of a van near the Clark Fork River and also snapped shots of the vehicle’s license plates and VIN. She wrote an angry note on a sheet of cardboard accusing the van’s occupants of throwing rocks at her and her dog and affixed it to the vehicle. Though law enforcement would ignore this evidence, the Mastrovito’s private detectives ran the plates and tracked down owner of the van. One of David’s truck windows was also coincidentally broken on this particular Friday.
Two weeks later, the last known communications from Rebekah’s phone were logged. In a text conversation made on Friday 16 July 2021, Rebekah conversed with a woman called Bevin Adams to schedule a time to swap the last of the marital property. Bevin Harkins Adams Cook is David Barsotti’s VA caregiver. She is also known to be fanatically loyal to David. Because of the standing No Contact Order, David and Rebekah were prohibited by law from making the exchange directly. Bevin Adams was asked to make the exchange on David’s behalf, and was in touch with Rebekah on this particular Friday about scheduling that exchange.
Text exchanges between Rebekah and a coworker on Monday 19 July 2021 confirm that Rebekah joined her co-workers at another downtown Missoula watering hole called Al’s & Vic’s after work on Sunday 18 July 2021 from approximately midnight to 12:30 AM. Though they didn’t know it at the time, this shifter would be her fellow employees’ final earthly interaction with Rebekah. Throughout that weekend Rebekah’s closest friends expressed grave concern with regards to her situation.
Then on Tuesday, all hell broke loose.
Rebekah had apparently agreed to meet with Bevin Adams on Tuesday 20 July 2021, at a Town Pump in Superior, MT to exchange marital property that included a bong and some cannabis (up to a pound-and-a-half of cannabis according to one source, which law enforcement are alleged to have burned) among other things, inside of a rubber tote.
To reiterate, Rebekah and her husband were still prohibited from meeting in person, necessitating a third party to make the exchange. If the meeting indeed took place as authorities insist it did, this third party was the last person to see Rebekah alive. And since Rebekah is said to have told the caregiver about her plan to visit the Alberton Rocks, Bevin was on a very short list of people who knew where she could be found that afternoon.
Authorities claim that the surveillance footage from Town Pump that day positively confirms Rebekah’s presence there at 2:15 PM, but they won’t disclose the footage, nor have they presented any convincing evidence of this claim to family members. What they have presented to family members does not constitute proof of anything, since the grainy still images from surveillance cameras appear too blurry to confirm much of anything for sure. Nevertheless, law enforcement have always insisted that Rebekah can be seen in the footage, despite the family being unable to identify her from the same images. What’s more, the family’s requests to enhance the images were declined by the Missoula County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities won’t disclose the images to a wider audience and only seized recordings from 2 of the available 12 cameras at Town Pump.
David’s former VA caregiver, Brandy Walker, was initially tasked with making the exchange. At the last minute Brandy was pulled by David who handed the responsibility over to Bevin Adams, his current caregiver. This point cannot be confirmed through witness testimony, however, because Bevin Adams refuses to speak with investigators. She’s not talking about what happened that day with anyone, except maybe David Barsotti.
Recently disclosed surveillance camera footage from David Barsotti’s next-door neighbor in Superior reveals that one of David’s trucks left David’s driveway at 2:09 PM, six minutes prior to the nearby exchange at Town Pump. Though it’s difficult to tell who is driving the vehicle in this footage, it’s very existence calls into question David’s alibi for that day: that he spent the entire day at home.
In the hours following the alleged Town Pump meeting, Mineral County dispatch received a 911 call from an “Oregon family” passing through Montana. What was the emergency? The tourists apparently told dispatch they had found personal effects on the shoreline of the Clark Fork River near Alberton. It’s impossible to know for sure what was said on this alleged 911 call because authorities continue to withhold it to this day.
Depending on which media outlets we choose to believe, the items left on the beach may include Rebekah’s car keys, eyeglasses, sunglasses, flip flops, shirt, cap, dog leash, e-collar remote, lanyard, smart phone, driver’s license and credit card, all folded neatly in an organized pile with the ID and credit card placed in a row on top. These items were found on the east side of the Alberton Climbing Rock. We’ve learned since that her phone was in her vehicle, which had been parked for days. Also found in the vehicle was Rebekah’s purse, lending to a curiosity about why any of her cards and belongings were laid out on the beach to begin with. It’s also important to note that the personal items retrieved from the riverbank were not those exchanged during the alleged Town Pump meeting.
Why anyone would call 911 after merely stumbling across some belongings on a shoreline remains an important question. To this day, nobody but law enforcement has heard the recording of this 911 call or knows exactly when it occurred, leading some to believe that it might not exist at all. But according to the Mineral County Law Round Up from the 28 July 2021 issue of Valley Press, a Deputy responded to “suspicious activity” at Mile Marker 72 on I-90 on the 20th of July 2021. This entry appears next to another “suspicious activity” entry from the same afternoon, just three miles up the road at Mile Marker 75, where again we don’t know much beyond, “Deputy responded”.
Among law enforcement’s response on scene at the beach was Mineral County Sheriff Mike Toth, who declared the crime scene “compromised,” perhaps due to the existence of footprints crisscrossing all around where Rebekah’s belongings were found. Also on scene were Missoula Sheriff Captain Bill Burt and Missoula County ChaplainLowell Hochhalter. In addition to “serving” Missoula as Chaplain, Hochhalter is also the President and CEO of an organization called theLifeGuard Group that purports to lead the fight against human trafficking, and receives money from Town Pump for doing so.
Rebekah’s car was identified, prompting a massive search that included ground and water teams as well as air support. Even Mike Johnson from Montana River Outfitters joined Rebekah’s brother Antonio for a 40 mile search of the Clark Fork. Search efforts were focused between the town of Alberton and the Alberton Gorge.
Angela Mastrovito was informed that Rebekah’s car was found parked at the St. John’s Fishing Access Recreation Area along the Clark Fork River near Mile Marker 71 in the Interstate 90 corridor, and that Rebekah was now officially considered a missing person. Flashing to her last conversations with Rebekah earlier that month Angela remembered the care package she’d mailed to her daughter full of Christmas ornaments, socks, and dog toys. Overwhelmed with anxiety, Angela wasted no time packing her life up into a suitcase and setting out west for Montana to find her daughter.
On Wednesday 21 July 2021 Rebekah’s brother, Antonio Aletori, filed the official missing person report. Then on Friday 23 July 2021, Angela arrived in Montana with her husband Gerry. That same day, Mineral County Sheriff Mike Toth inexplicably changed Rebekah’s category from “missing person” to “river accident”. Sheriff Toth has cited video evidence recovered from Rebekah’s iPhone as reason for this alteration. The video in question shows Rebekah training Cerberus on the beach, and the time stamps designated the video was recorded on 20 July 2021 at at 3:15 PM, an hour after the alleged Town Pump meeting took place. Rebekah’s associates say this is likely an older video with altered time stamps. Authorities contend that Rebekah dived into the Clark Fork in an attempt to save her floundering dog, who they say, got caught up in the undertow. Officials cling to this narrative despite the absence of any witnesses whatsoever to corroborate any part of it, or the many logical plot holes that researchers have sussed out since.
Possible scenarios other than a potential river accident have yet to be investigated by authorities, despite the fact that abloody tank top was recovered near this beach, on the land above the Clark Fork River. The article was designated by law enforcement as nothing but a “handkerchief” and quickly locked into evidence where it’s been forgotten ever since. Though Rebekah’s empty vehicle and personal effects prompted a massive search of the river, law enforcement refused to allocate resources to the search of land, which would appear less suspect if it weren’t for the bloody clothing that got swept under the proverbial rug.
The following Monday, on 26 July 2021, the lifeless body of Rebekah’s dog Cerberus was recovered near the town of Tarkio along the northern bank of the Clark Fork River. He was found a whopping ten miles west downriver from where Rebekah’s personal effects were recovered, meaning his body apparently traveled through two Class IV rapids named “Tumbleweed” and “Boat Eater,” as well as a series of twists and turns before making it as far downriver as he did. Based on the mother’s intuition of Angela Mastrovito, the search team entered the river from the Tarkio Fishing Access at Mile Marker 69 and traveled east one mile where they found Cerberus on the riverbank, half submerged. Authorities declared it a drowning despite the fact that an official necropsy to determine the cause of death was never performed. Instead, Rebekah’s parents were told that Cerberus was too badly decomposed for analysis to yield useful information, meaning the dog’s cause of death remains officially unknown.
Why, then, did Mineral County Sheriff Mike Toth publicly announce that a necropsy had been performed, when there is no evidence that medical notes of any kind were ever recorded by anyone? In fact, an x-ray of the dog’s neck seems to be the only record of any kind ever taken of Cerberus’ remains prior to cremation.
Nevertheless, Sheriff Toth called Angela to tell her Cerberus had been sickly and in ill health at the time of his death. Angela knew this wasn’t true, so she asked Toth if he had confirmed this claim with veterinary records. He told her he didn’t need to because, “I trust the person who told me.”
“Well who told you?” Angela asked.
Toth answered, “I don’t need to disclose that.”
“Well you and I both know that there’s only one other person who knew that dog as well as Rebekah,” Angela said. “And that was Rebekah’s husband.” It was at this moment that Angela realized there seemed to be a pre-existing relationship between and Sheriff Toth and his buddy “Dave”.
Because Cerberus’ remains were frozen after recovery, the dog’s collar had become rigidly frozen to the animal’s bloated flesh and impossible to remove, making further analysis even more difficult. But that shouldn’t have deterred authorities from doing their job and treating the body as evidence in an ongoing investigation, instead of nudging Angela toward the possibility of cremation as they did. Even detectives in Missoula County failed to inform the family that the dog’s body might constitute evidence.
A week later, on Wednesday 04 August 2021, the Mastrovitos had another meeting with Sheriff Toth, Undersheriff Cashman and Sergeant Ryan Funke. At this meeting Sergeant Funke admitted to being friends with David.
That same Wednesday, 04 August 2021, David Barsotti had this to say about his wife in a social media conversation with person “X” that was captured via screenshot:
DAVID: “There are things that would make my wife come back from the grave… none are right. And authorities as well as law enforcement have been notified. People will honor her regardless of a raving lunatic mother. And a woman, Melissa, who in 10 years has never heard her name.
X: “So they do know she’s passed over? Why is her mom looking? IDK who Melissa is.”
DAVID: “Yeah … they are positive! But died happy trying to save her dog. Her mother was never a mother to her and is trying to make up for it. Bekah truly despised her…and this shit…this is next level twisted.”
X: “Then why haven’t they told the public they found her? How do you know that she died saving her dog? I thought she’s just missing.”
DAVID: “No foul play nothing but sweetheart letting her dog cool off and she had no idea how to read the water. I was informed on the 21st that it wasn’t a rescue any longer.”
X: “But with no body, we can only hope she’s alive.”
DAVID: “It’s been 14 days without food, shelter, or clean water…her dog drowned in that same current and Bekah couldn’t swim to save her life. All of you please stop. The river will release her when it’s damned good and ready.”
David’s disparaging mention of “a raving lunatic mother. And a woman, Melissa” as dark forces clouding over his ability to properly honor his wife seem misplaced given that these are the two individuals privy to some of the most damning aspects of this situation. The cruel reference to Angela’s grieving mother as a “raving lunatic” raises even greater suspicion.
Sheriff Toth continued stonewalling the requests to bring in outside resources, so Rebekah’s family began gathering funds to privately contract Search And Rescue (SAR) firms Wings of Hope and Northstar K9 to search the river with Cadaver dogs, drones and sonar. Contracting with the family instead of the authorities also allowed for the public disclosure of evidence, which likely would have remained sealed otherwise. Missoula Sheriff Captain Bill Burt also blocked independent search requests made by the family whenever he could.
On Tuesday, 10 August 2021, sonar imaging of the Clark Fork River was submitted to the Mineral County Sheriff’s Office. The family would later learn that dogs alerted on a specific area of the river prompting the deployment of divers. Sonar images further revealed an image of something five-feet-five-inches long, the exact height of Rebekah Barsotti. Missoula Sheriff Captain Bill Burt declared the mass nothing more than a “pile of rocks” because “technology doesn’t lie” leading him to immediately abort the search on 23 August 2021. We later learned that SAR teams were never provided with a photograph of Rebekah, one of the most fundamental elements of a rescue and recovery mission.
The following day, on Tuesday 24August 2021, deputy Patrick Nobles’ body cam footage was disclosed in legal discovery. On Sunday 12 September 2021, NBC Montana’s Cynthia Koures provided updates on the river search and announced the upcoming vigil. The following Monday, 13 September 2021, Dateline NBC’s Andrea Cavallier did the same.
On Monday 20 September 2021, Rebekah’s parents held a vigil in Missoula at McCormick Park as a platform to discuss domestic violence. Though Missoula and Mineral County officials continue to deny that Rebekah’s disappearance had anything to do whatsoever with domestic violence, it remains a stubborn truth that David Barsotti was arrested for threatening to shoot her hands off in the weeks prior. David Barsotti’s attorney, Paul Ryan, acknowledged that he was aware of the fact that Rebekah was missing.
On the same day, 20 September 2021, the veteran’s insurance group USAA called Angela to notify her that Rebekah’s policy had been canceled. The news confused Angela, as she had herself paid to extend Rebekah’s coverage through the end of September. “And when I called to inquire they told me that it had been reported to them that she was deceased,” Angela said. She learned that David Barsotti, who was the primary sponsor of the policy, had called USAA to cancel Rebekah’s coverage on the basis that she was now “declared to be deceased.” Angela couldn’t understand how David could know Rebekah was deceased or why he would cancel a policy he wasn’t paying for.
On Wednesday 29 September 2021, Missoula County Sheriffs Office called Rebekah’s parents in for a meeting to notify them that Missoula had decided to transfer Rebekah’s case, requests, and reports all back to Mineral County. Prior to the meeting, Rebekah’s mother reached out to the Director of the Missing Persons Clearing House for Montana to invite him to the meeting, but Missoula’s Undersheriff also called and told him not to come. At that joint meeting, Sheriff Toth also admitted that, “We didn’t know what we had,” yet he remained committed to his “river accident” theory nevertheless.
Mike Toth
The following day, 30 September 2021, Sheriff Toth announced that extensive land searches had been performed when they had not. Angela contested the semantics of Toth’s verbiage, asserting that riverbank searches do not constitute land searches.
On Tuesday, 05 October 2021, The Mastrovitos attended a county meeting in Missoula. Sheriff TJ McDermott and Sergeant Ryan Prather told them that Rebekah’s personal effects were on their way back to Mineral County. While attending that meeting, they were E-mailed by Sheriff Toth, and learned that David wanted Rebekah’s guns.
The first recorded death threats against Rebekah’s parents occurred later that month on Halloween, 31 October 2021. An anonymous call was placed informing them of the high combustibility of their trailer, cynically encouraging them to move out for their own safety. The Mastrovitos contacted Missoula area authorities and filed a report with the Missoula City Police Department, only to watch Missoula officials punt the death threat case to the local Sheriff, who punted it over to Mineral County.
In an E-mail sent at 10:36 PM on 04 November 2021, SergeantRyan Prather of the Missoula County Sheriff’s Office told the family that this separate case had been handed off to Mineral County Attorney Ellen Donohue. The Mastrovitos couldn’t get a response from Donohue, and later learned that she was dating Sheriff Mike Toth. The threat led them to contact several other organizations, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Department of Criminal Investigation (DCI), the National Threat Operation Center in Washington DC (NTOC) and the US Marshals Office.
CrimeStoppers officially accepted Rebekah’s case on 08 November 2021, in no small part because of the efforts of a DOJ missing person specialist called Brian Frost.
On Tuesday 16 November 2021, Angela’s sister, Laura Williams, submitted a FOIA request for the 911 call placed on 20 July 2021. After getting the run around, Laura was told she needed to submit an additional application. It was denied some time later, citing “confidential criminal justice information and a pending investigation.” But how can there be interference with a pending criminal investigation if no criminal investigation is ongoing? This seemingly obvious contradiction was fueled by conjecture and speculation. They don’t know what happened, but assume she accidentally drowned without evidence or witnesses. The Montana FOIA attorney admitted to Laura that she would have “to file suit to obtain a copy” of the 911 call, stating further that such a suit would cost “somewhere in the neighborhood of 8-10k.”
Ten grand to hear a phone call? But according to Montana law, 911 calls are supposed to be “public criminal justice information” as articulated by Article II, Part II, Section 9, of the Montana Constitution, which states:
“No person shall be deprived of the right to examine documents or to observe the deliberations of all public bodies or agencies of state government and its subdivisions, except in cases in which the demand of individual privacy clearly exceeds the merits of public disclosure.”
Someone in the audience asked, “What witness?” to which Toth replied, “We’re not going to tell you, because if you reach out to him, now you’re harassing a witness. We know who he is. We know who the family is. We’re in contact.”
Mineral County Sheriff Deputy Ryan Funke also told family members, point blank, that a young man from Oregon placed the 911 call. Highway Patrol responded to this call but never filled out a report of any kind before passing the bill off to the Mineral County Sheriff’s Office. And every law enforcement agency seemed to be punting to the other. Highway Patrol punted to Mineral County, Mineral punted to Missoula, Missoula punted back to Mineral, and each provided contradictory information.
There is nothing in the law that grants greater protection to 911 recordings. According to a legal opinion penned by the Attorney General, such recordings may be withheld only “when the demand for individual privacy clearly exceeds the merit of public disclosure,” as is the case with other public documents. Confidential information may be blacked out, but an edited report should be public, including the time, date and location of the call, as well as content.
Until this 911 call is disclosed, we really can’t understand how finding someone’s belongings unattended on a beach constitutes an emergency worth dialing 911 for. It doesn’t make any sense, and insults our intelligence. There’s garbage strewn all along the Clark Fork around Missoula, and nobody bothers making a call to anyone to even complain about the litter. And in a true emergency, one would expect the belongings to be scattered, not folded. So how does a pile of stuff folded neatly on the beach constitute an emergency of any kind? We’ll never know until we hear the 911 call.
As Angela articulated at the County Commissioner’s meeting:
“This scenario is: ‘girl rescues dog’. You are not going to take the time to take your driver’s license and your credit card out of your pocket. You’re not going to take the time – she wore sunglasses all day long, because of a nevus on the cornea of her eye. So she wore sunglasses all day long. So law enforcement looks at the sunglasses and the hat, discarded, as: ‘She threw them off’.”
On Monday, 29 November 2021, the second documented death threat against the Mastrovitos was called in to their lawyer, who was informed that their Virginia home would be burned to the ground. As the death threats continued to mount, Angela noticed some of the harassing calls were being dialed from a Texas area code. After incessantly calling the number back over and over, again and again, a man finally answered. What this man may not have realized at the time he answered his phone was his activation of Face Time, allowing for a glimpse of his likeness.
Angela snapped a few screenshots before informing this man that his identity could now be ascertained and that he would be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Then he had a stroke of conscience, admitting that David Barsotti had contracted him to kill Angela and her husband.
The assassin-for-hire revealed himself to be Nathan Jacobsen, who claimed to be David’s former best friend. But after David asked him to burn a house in Virginia and a trailer in Montana, Jacobsen felt as though he was being positioned to take the fall for something awful. So he began recording their phone conversations. Those recordings make it crystal clear that David Barsotti contracted Nathan Jacobsen for the arson of Angela and Gerry Mastrovito’s Virginia home, as well as their late daughter’s Montana rental trailer, with the intention of killing them, or at least intimidating them into flight.
Lauren Matthias of Hidden True Crime interviews Nathan Jacobsen
The Mastrovito’s first Private Investigator, John Baker of East Valley Investigative Services, encouraged Jacobsen to record as many of these conversations as he could, and Nathan has since collected 92 such recordings. The audio files provided to the media since confirm David Barsotti’s malicious intent to use incendiary explosives, namely thermite and tannerite, to carry out the assassination of his parents-in-law, and “make it look like an accident.” We also know from the recordings that David provided Nathan with specific orders for executing the dog with a pistol, saying he didn’t want it to perish of smoke inhalation while the parents were suffocating in the next room.
Nathan then received a Christmas present from David, and upon opening the gift was appalled to find Rebekah’s para-cord bracelet (the one she’s wearing from the picture allegedly taken the day she went missing) along with other items he says were obviously sentimental to Rebekah. Nathan again felt the jaws of a trap.
At this point, the Mastrovitos thought they had all the evidence they needed to implicate David as a suspect. But even when evidence surfaced that David Barsotti hired Nathan Jacobsen to assassinate the family and burn down their home, law enforcement still refused to question him or investigate. Even Jacobsen’s text message confession wasn’t enough to elicit law enforcement support: “I was hired as a hit man to kill you and your dog, mercifully like they killed Cerb.”
Nathan Jacobsen’s wounds
After Nathan had accumulated his 92 audio files, he appeared on the Williston Trending Topics radio show to publicly acknowledge their existence for the first time on 26 May 2022. Several hours after calling in to give this interview, Nathan Jacobsen was wounded in a gunshot incident. Someone evidently sneaked up behind him at a car wash and fired several shots in his direction, one of which hit him in the right thigh. He was subsequently hospitalized and questioned by law enforcement. Jacobsen says that he’s remained on the move in his car because he fears the repercussions from David, who he says is “capable of anything.”
To make matters worse, Sheriff Toth refused to listen to any of the said audio files, protesting that, “We don’t know that’s David on the tape!” Toth prioritized the artificial need to “verify” the voices as opposed to reviewing the content, further obstructing the family’s efforts to the decided benefit of his buddy, David Barsotti.
On 08 December 2021, Monte Turner of the Mineral Independent announced the Mastrovito’s had increased the reward to $12,000 for information leading directly to Rebekah’s whereabouts.
On Tuesday,01 February 2022, Gonzo Journalist Travis Mateer of Zoom Town Chronicles located the offices of the Lifeguard Group on the 4th floor of Missoula’s Florence Building. Joe Danzer answered the door expressing familiarity with the Barsotti case. Danzer claimed to have participated in the search for Rebekah, though he could not recall when he apparently searched. He distinguished that his efforts were not affiliated with his official role as LifeGuard’s “search coordinator” because they lacked the resources to conduct official searches. Angela Mastrovito confirmed that LifeGuard never provided any assistance whatsoever. It seemed strangely coincidental for Town Pump – the company owning the station where Rebekah was allegedly last seen alive – to provide LifeGuard with a donation in the amount of $30,000 while all of this was going on.
On Friday, 25 February 2022, Rebekah’s parents held a vigil for their daughter at the Missoula County Courthouse. Angela received harassing calls from David during the vigil demanding access to Rebekah’s storage unit, which apparently contained furniture belonging to him.
Dissatisfied with law enforcement’s termination of the search, the Mastrovitos circumvented the Sheriff’s Office and privately hired Wings of Hope and NorthstarK9 search and rescue teams at their own expense. And for the entire month of March 2022, Brad Smith of Wings of Hope, alongside Northstar, searched the Clark Fork River from Alberton Rock to Thompson Falls, Montana. Thirty-one days of combing that river revealed nothing. Angela was told that if Northstar doesn’t find Rebekah, “she’s not in the river.”
The following Wednesday, 02 March 2022, another person close to David Barsotti suddenly died in inexplicable circumstances. Christina Frances Adams died at the age of 28 in Superior, Montana of a mysterious illness. Christina was the daughter of Brandy Walker, David Barsotti’s former VA caregiver and believed by some to have been intimate with David Barsotti, though Brandy Walker denies such a relationship existed. Christina’s funeral service was held on Tuesday, 08March 2022. Mineral County officials failed to perform an autopsy, and all remaining forensic evidence was thoroughly destroyed upon the subsequent embalming of her body. In another seemingly bizarre twist, Christina’s remains were buried in the back yard of the person she was caring for in Superior.
On Monday, 14 March 2022, Sheriff Toth witnessed David Barsotti tearing Rebekah’s “missing” poster down from light posts around Superior. Toth approached Barsotti and reprimanded him for tearing the posters down. That same day, Toth officially withdrew from the upcoming Sheriff race.
The following day, 15 March 2022, Sheriff Toth placed a call to the Mastrovito’s second private detective, James Terry of Gulfcoast Investigations, about the posters and the reprimand. Toth mentioned that several other people also saw David angrily ripping those posters down. It seems puzzling why a bereaved husband would deliberately tear down posters of his missing wife, until we consider the fact that David’s domestic violence hearing was, at this point, a mere ten days away.
On Friday, 25 March 2022, David Barsotti appeared in Mineral County Court on charges of domestic violence for the incident that occurred 1 year prior, on 09 March 2021. Attendees of that hearing learned many things, among them that David Barsotti had been physically violent and mentally abusive in his previous marriage, which ended in divorce. His previous wife still fears for her life.
It also came out that David Barsotti was never actually in the Marine Corps, the cornerstone of his self-made reputation.
The County Attorney representing Rebekah requested David’s DD214 to authenticate his claims of PTSD and a Traumatic Brain Injury as justification for his behavior that night. But the documents revealed that David never successfully completed basic training and therefore is not a military veteran. According to the County Attorney:
“The defendant claims to have Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and a Traumatic Brain Injury which caused him to trigger from her touch. Yet the evidence will show he did not complete his military service, serving only four months, eleven days in boot camp until receiving a stress fracture in his shoulder lifting weights. He then received an Entry Level Separation from the military. Yet on this evening the defendant told deputy Nobles his trigger was due to his extensive military career.”
Deputy Patrick Nobles was one of two witnesses called to the stand to describe his interaction with David Barsotti the night of David’s arrest and incarceration (Nobles was also fired weeks after making this arrest on “unrelated” adultery accusations). The other was the 911 dispatcher who was asked by David’s defense team about Rebekah’s calm presentation as “proof” that she could not possibly have been in distress, even though she called 911, which is itself a clear sign of distress. David chose to plead the fifth and did not take the stand.
It goes without saying that no one had heard from or seen Rebekah for nearly a year, as she had officially been missing for more than eight months at the time of this hearing. It should also go without saying that it was not possible for Rebekah to legally defend herself. Yet unbelievably, this fact was not allowed to be spoken in court, and the judge refused to acknowledge her missing status. Rebekah’s attorney was explicitly disallowed from saying anything about her official status as a missing person.
On the other hand, David’s attorney, Paul Ryan, was allowed to belittle Rebekah, who “didn’t even bother showing up to her own hearing” – something she couldn’t possibly have done because she was dead. But that didn’t stop David’s defense team from incessantly declaring that, “She’s not even here to share her side!” The only rebuttal allowed to Rebekah’s team was to passively acknowledge that yes, it was true that Rebekah failed to show. Shouldn’t a court of law seem a tad more concerned that a key witness in a domestic abuse case failed to appear because she had gone missing?
How convenient for David Barsotti.
In the end, a jury of seven peers found David “not guilty” and his charges were dismissed. The state failed to push harder, and Deputy County Attorney Debra Jackson called neither of her two available witnesses. One of those witnesses was an ex-girlfriend of David’s that could testify to his abusive treatment and the fact that she still fears him. The other could have testified to the fact that David Barsotti admitted to her that he watched his wife, Rebekah, drown in the river. Both witnesses remained conspicuously absent from the stand, perhaps because their testimony could violate the court’s standing order to keep Rebekah’s missing status on the hush-hush.
STOLEN VALOR
David Barsotti presents as Marine Corps Special Ops, wears an eye patch, walks with a limp, tells war stories and receives VA benefits. He also claims to have lost 27 men under his command as a Marine Corps Sergeant and to have worked as a private military contractor for Blackwater Worldwide, the world’s largest mercenary army. He further attests that his companies, Black Thorn Enterprises and Erebus, were his means of doing business in that world.
Jason Maxwell’s letter board points to David Barsotti’s house
But his eye patch switches between the left and right eye and often ends up on his forehead during social occasions, illustrating that David has both eyes despite stories he’s told about a “pit” in his skull. His characteristic limp is likewise demonstrably fabricated, as it comes and goes and switches legs depending on where he is and who is observing him. According to DD214’s released in Mineral County Court, David Barsotti only served 4 months and 11 days, and never completed basic training. So how he ever became eligible for VA benefits remains a question.
Barsotti’s next-door neighbor, retired Marine veteran Jason Maxwell, was among those in attendance at the domestic violence hearing. When he learned that David was a case of stolen valor, Maxwell made some calls to get David’s DV plates revoked, and is now in contact with the VA Division of Criminal Investigation.
David currently enjoys a pension, a VA Home Loan, two Disabled Veterans license plates, and his third paid VA caregiver. The first was his wife Rebekah Barsotti; the second was Brandy Walker; the third was Bevin Adams of Florence, Montana. Friends and acquaintances were keen to note David’s change in referring to Rebekah as his caregiver rather than as his wife after she accepted the position. Rebekah became David’s caregiver sometime during 2019 and sincerely believed he was a disabled Marine, as we can see in a 2018 picture from her Instagram account captioned “My Marine” of David Barsotti on a truck in an oil field.
Eligibility for paid VA caregivers is determined by a veteran’s inability to drive, or dress, or feed them self. Recently uploaded TikTok videos show Barsotti vigorously training his dogs with attack commands while wearing a bite suit, as well as driving and parking his truck in a handicap spot. Maxwell says, “I’ve never seen him once need help with anything,” citing a wedding where David stayed up all night with his friend Carlos roasting a pig. Maxwell further states that any “disabilities” David might have were sustained from civilian work and recreational activities.
David Barsotti in the center at the Bootlegger’s Bar Thanksgiving Dinner, 2020
A man that once worked for David Barsotti when he owned Treadstone Construction Company has confirmed the estranged husband provides different versions of his military lies, describing him as a pathological liar and a narcissistic sociopath.
Stolen valor isn’t just a dishonorable practice, it’s also a criminal offense. Given the magnitude of skulduggery emanating from 63 Bucko Lane, it seems ever more curious that law enforcement neglected to investigate David Barsotti.
Mineral County Sheriff Mike Toth
FRIENDS IN HIGH PLACES
Sheriff Mike Toth has personally informed the Mastrovitos that David Barsotti is not a person of interest, and “would never be a person of interest,” let alone a suspect, because he has an alibi for 20 July. Toth further informed the family that he had no intentions to search for their daughter because she was, “not the President of the United States.” He stated further, “I wasn’t even going to look for your daughter but my deputy insisted.”
Rebekah’s case was never treated as a criminal investigation, yet authorities impounded her car and confiscated her laptop on the grounds that it “could be” an impending criminal investigation. Despite glaring evidence of foul play, Sheriff Mike Toth labeled Rebekah’s disappearance an “accidental drowning in a river accident” before ever finding any evidence to fit that conclusion. They stated from day one that Rebekah drowned trying to save her dog after Cerberus got caught up in the current. It seems strange, then, that officers would withhold property as “evidence” if no criminal investigation was ever declared.
How Rebekah’s disappearance came to be viewed as an accidental drowning defies logic, since David repeatedly threatened to drown her and the dog. That authorities were able to immediately dismiss even the possibility of foul play seems fantastic given that David clearly violated the restraining order by making death threats against his wife, who went missing soon thereafter. It seems suspicious that David was never considered a suspect or even a “person of interest”.
But the contradictions don’t end there.
Sheriff Toth complained about the limitations of his department’s resources to be able to conduct searches but then actively swatted down all the additional help that the family were attempting to bring in. MCSO alleged that they’d depleted their resources on the water search and did not have the resources to conduct land searches for evidence on the surrounding riverbanks and forests.
“Despite law enforcement’s confidence that Barsotti drowned, Sheriff Toth says his department still follows every credible lead they receive, but he noted it’s a big county, and finding Rebekah is just one of their many responsibilities. “We have a county that stretches 77 miles on the interstate all the way to the state line. I have six road deputies and then myself and the Undersheriff to handle calls, and you know, we’re stretched thin,” Sheriff Toth noted.”
As of the 2020 census, the population of Superior was recorded at 897. It is true that Mineral County has neither detectives nor investigators, and were forced to temporarily close their jail in 2019 due to lack of personnel and funding. Since jurisdiction of this case belongs to the Sheriff’s Office, and since all additional help must be invited in by the Sheriff, it’s their prerogative whether or not to allow additional search and rescue resources in. So then if Sheriff Toth was stretched as thin as he complained he was, why not invite in additional agencies like FBI or DCI, as he repeatedly pledged at the County Commissioner’s hearing? And why didn’t he invite in nonprofit SAR groups when they’d already been hired and paid for on the family’s dime? Many nonprofit groups offered to help but were not invited, despite the fact that doing so would have cost Toth’s department nothing. It seems further perplexing that Mike Toth was willing to work with other Sheriffs and even psychics in the past during his time as a PI, but refuses to work with either as Sheriff.
Rebekah’s case remained inactive but open for months; inactive, due to the lack of leads, but open, thus allowing for the continued withholding of evidence. According to Mineral County Undersheriff Wayne Cashman’s circular logic, they couldn’t disclose any of the available evidence due to the potential of a pending criminal investigation, which they wouldn’t open, because they didn’t have probable cause, due to a lack of evidence. They can’t release the evidence because they don’t have it? In legal circles we call this “Schrödinger’s exhibit 22”; a vial of evidence is sealed in an investigation with a potential murder victim, who both is and isn’t dead. And while it would seem that Mineral County would have to be corrupt to keep from opening an investigation where evidence of criminal activity exists, by their logic, refusing to disclose evidence in order to protect the integrity of a potential investigation itself constitutes evidence that County authorities are not corrupt.
Then there’s the case of the magical, disappearing/reappearing affidavit of probable cause from Rebekah’s 09 March 2021 domestic violence 911 call. Copies of the PFMA and No Contact Order were conveniently misfiled, making them impossible to obtain for 6 months. When the Mastrovitos requested copies of public documents on 16 August 2021, they were informed that none were available. It was only after a savvy reporter finally located them that they were published in the media on 22 September 2021, whereupon the public were able to finally learn that David told Rebekah he would “shoot her hands off.” Of course, the body mechanics of holding a person down by their wrist with one hand while shooting their immobilized digits off with a pistol held in the other, seems like something difficult to accomplish alone. Then we learned that David had a pair of Peerless handcuffs in his pocket when deputy Patrick Nobles entered the marital home.
Nathan Jacobsen confirms David Barsotti’s close personal friendship to Sheriff Mike Toth:
“They talk, hang out. The sheriff coaches him on what to say. … They’re protecting him since day one, and they’ll continue protecting him. He’s in good. I’ve got audio files of him chumming it up with them. … And he’s always talked about how they would watch his back. They always inform him before they do the parents, and they always coach him on what he should say or do, or not say or do.”
It starts to make sense why law enforcement might refuse to question this man about what happened to his missing wife, even though he should be considered, by procedural norm, the prime suspect.
Mike Toth ran for Sheriff several years ago and lost. In the summer of 2020, then-Sheriff Mike Boone announced his retirement, necessitating a new election, per Montana law. But Mineral County bureaucrats encouraged Boone to stay on so they could appoint Mike Toth instead. According to an article written in the Valley Tribune by Monte Turner from July 2020, “Toth owns a security guard company and is a licensed private investigator in Montana.” But isn’t it a conflict of interest to run a security company and work as a licensed private investigator on the side while also serving as Sheriff? Isn’t it a “fundamental conflict” when that same non-elected Sheriff also serves as the County Coroner? How about when that same Sheriff also happens to be dating the County Attorney, Ellen Donohue?
Does any of this seem problematic when the same Sheriff is known to be close friends with David Barsotti? Sheriff Mike Toth himself admitted to James Terry that he advised David Barsotti against searching for his wife.
“Yes,” said Toth. “I told David not to search for his wife, because if he found her it wouldn’t look good.” And David Barsotti had boasted on many occasions that he was friends with “the department,” and also seemed close to Mineral County Sheriff’s Deputy Ryan Funk, a man with connections to a poaching group known as Coyote Club. Angela Mastrovito has since described her first encounter with deputy Funke as being characterized by the phrase, “There’s nothing to see here.”
Mineral County Sheriff Deputy Ryan Funke
David Barsotti’s primary alibi that he was at home on the afternoon of 20 July 2021 was backed up by local jailer and “human trafficking police officer” Chris Kemp, a military veteran known around Superior as Sheriff Toth’s right-hand-man, who fetches the Sheriff’s lunch on a daily basis. His wife, Lynette Kemp, corroborates David’s primary alibi.
David Barsotti now finds himself the proud owner of at least two conflicting alibis. The first, recorded by law enforcement, states David was having a barbecue at home with the Kemps and several others on 20 July 2021. But he has informed at least two individuals of his extraordinary distress after “watching his wife drown in the river.” Due to the consequences inherent in violating the restraining order, he apparently had a friend make the 911 call. David spilled this alternative alibi to both a budtender at the St. Regis Starbuds, and a tobacconist at Missoula’s Bell Pipe Shop. The innocent do not change their stories, so the existence of an alternative alibi seems as disturbing as the content itself. As of this writing, David Barsotti has vomited up least two additional documented alibis that also conflict with the two just outlined.
Rebekah’s family asked for the search of the marital residence and property and were told there was no probable cause to do that. The Barsotti’s marital home sits on the banks of the Clark Fork riverfront, downriver from and to the west of the beach where Cerberus was found, as well as the beach where Rebekah’s belongings were recovered. Nathan Jacobsen avows that this Clark Fork riverfront property constitutes the primary motivation for all the nefarious behavior.
According to Barsotti’s next-door neighbor Jason Maxwell, Rebekah had talked about initiating divorce proceedings for years. The couple had never signed a prenuptial agreement, meaning said proceedings would inevitably lead to estate asset division. That meant selling the marital home, or one partner paying out the other to keep it. In any event, she was ready to leave and wanted half of everything, including the house with her name on it. She was legally entitled to that, but David didn’t want to give it up. He demanded Rebekah sign a Quit Claim Deed and relinquish the mortgage equity over to him, but she wasn’t giving up her share of 50% either.
Following the 25 March 2022 domestic violence hearing, the Mastrovito’s finally got clearance to search Rebekah’s impounded Volkswagen with privately hired cadaver dog teams. They found things that even the Sheriffs missed, including her pistol in the driver’s side door. This was the family’s last chance to search Rebekah’s vehicle, as law enforcement returned the Volkswagen over to David Barsotti on Monday 04 April 2022.
Then on 28 March 2022 Angela’s second private investigator, James Terry, appeared on the Williston Trending Topics radio show for the first time to discuss Rebekah’s case, saying “It’s not just a missing person case – it will make your hair stand on end!” During this interview, Mr. Terry disclosed the fact that Mr. Barsotti’s alibi had become suspect after David told several individuals that he “watched his wife drown in the Clark Fork River.” Following this recorded radio interview, the witnesses whom David had told his alternative alibi to began receiving calls and voice messages from David on their private numbers, which they had not provided to David. The tobacconist’s 8-minute sworn testimony had already been recorded by attorney Spencer Bradford. And though Deputy Ryan Funke attempted to discredit these witnesses, their stories haven’t changed one bit, unlike Mr. Barsotti’s.
On Sunday 08 May 2022 sonar images were published online. The frames in question recorded a 5’5” mass that law enforcement described as a “pile of rocks.”
A week later, on Tuesday 17 May 2022, Sergeant Ryan Funke informed the Mastrovitos that a body had been recovered after it was located by a 26 year-old fisherman named “Nate,” but could not yet positively identify it as their daughter. Nate the fisherman happens to be the son of Tina Alexander, the Realtor who sold David Barsotti his Clark Fork riverfront home. The parents were not allowed to identify the body until David Barsotti had done so, and the Montana Crime Lab told family members they could view the body at the funeral home later.
Sergeant Ryan Funke also let it slip that the body had been “placed” on the banks of the Clark Fork, where it was located just 5 miles from the Barsotti’s marital home. It was noted that the body found was in extremely good condition, “like it had been frozen,” having undergone far less decomposition than the dog that was recovered ten months prior. The dog was covered in insects and bugs upon recovery, but Rebekah was recovered bug-free nearly a year later. It was reported that a segment of Rebekah’s index finger had become “skeletonized” up to the second knuckle but that her body was otherwise intact.
Sheriff Toth appeared on a radio show soon thereafter to tell the world that Rebekah’s “body was not stabbed and not shot.” Toth further stated, “Everything’s matching that she probably drowned,” but conceded that the official manner and cause of death could not be publicly released.
CONNECTIONS TO DOMESTIC TERRORISTS
Angela and Gerry vacated Rebekah’s trailer by 01 April 2022 following a court order secured by David Barsotti to seize what furniture remained, including Rebekah’s mattress. They moved out, and when David showed up at the trailer to haul the load, investigators had the property under surveillance. They observed David’s limp magically disappear as he and another man made trips gathering the furniture. They also ascertained the identity of David’s help as one, Steven Barry.
Barry on the left, Barsotti on the right
Sergeant First ClassSteven M. Barry was an instructor at the US Army’s Special Warfare Center before he became the editor of a “political warfare journal” called The Resisterfollowing the FBI’s murder of Randy Weaver’s family in 1992.
“When McVeigh was arrested earlier in 1995, a few days after the Oklahoma City bombing, police had found a photocopy of The Resister in his car. The copy, it turned out, was one of about 900 sent out free by Soldier of Fortune as part of a promotional package. Like the rest of the free Resisters, McVeigh’s copy carried a fax signature — a number that the FBI easily traced to a Colorado convenience store used by Pate to fax documents to Soldier of Fortune. FBI officials followed the trail to the store, then to Pate and finally to Barry.”
The feds were investigating Barry in 1996 but allowed his operation to continue because it helped them identify other extremists via The Resister’s subscribers. They even placed a DELTA soldier known to be sympathetic to Barry under surveillance and purposely leaked classified information to him in hopes it would lead to Barry, which it did. He was stripped of his security clearance on 06 March 1996 and his commanding officer at 3rd Special Forces Group, Colonel Mark Boyatt, condemned Barry, for his distribution of “operationally sensitive” classified materials:
“Your apparent disregard for the protection of sensitive information which could be used to cause the injury or death of your fellow soldiers is reprehensible,” Boyatt wrote. “[Y]our distribution of [The Resister] … causes me to question your loyalty and future value to the United States Army.”
Steven Barry was recently observed entering Grant Bailey’s antique shop in Stevensville, Montana. The owner of this antique’s shop, Grant “Jay” Bailey, also owns a Pawn Shop in Superior, where he lives with his wife Amy Bailey, who owns a gun store in the same town.
Grant Bailey is also the informant “witness” who told James Terry a fantastic story about fishing on the Clark Fork River last summer, during the afternoon of 20 July 2021. He says that at “about lunchtime” he remembers seeing seeing a black dog matching Cerberus’ description running along the bank in pursuit of a raft making its way down the river. In this raft, Jay says, were two men and another figure who was laying down between them.
Grant Bailey was also a witness to a Polson murder in 2017, where his testimony came into question due to the fact that he was and is, legally blind. When Grant told this story to Angela Mastrovito, she asked him, “With all due respect, if you’re legally blind, how did you see this?”
He replied, “Well, I’m 99% sure.”
So the one and only witness of the “dog chases raft” theory is a legally blind man who runs guns with his wife and has affiliations with the propagandist upon whom Timothy McVeigh relied to carry out his actions. Yet it seems unlikely that a legally blind man could provide credible witness testimony of sightings. MCSO doesn’t take him seriously either.
ANALYSIS
Given the available evidence, every aspect of the official story presented by authorities insults our intelligence. By their version of events, Bevin Adams was the last person to see Rebekah alive. But unless Bevin is willing to testify that she actually saw Rebekah that day, investigators will continue chasing a figment of someone else’s imagination.
It seems likely that Rebekah went missing prior to the twentieth of July for many reasons. Among them, the likelihood that a trinket exchange spiraled into a missing person declaration within a matter of just two hours seems relatively slim. But since the official story revolves around that date there’s a time hole obfuscating the available evidence.
Over the past year Rebekah’s family have traveled thousands of miles, spent a fortune, and endured unspeakable despair in the pursuit of finding their missing loved one. As if death threats and litigation weren’t enough to add to an already stressful load, Angela was accused of making a career from, and profiting off of, her daughter, because of the existence of Go Fund Me accounts. She was accosted at a Mineral County Courthouse vigil and told by one particularly angry individual that Rebekah’s flier had no place near the local hotel, and its shredded remains were shaken angrily in her face before they were crumpled into a ball and cast at Angela’s feet. In the face of all this adversity, Angela has only become more determined to reject the ridiculous version of events presented by authorities who are demonstrably compromised.
With regards to Rebekah’s estranged husband, the evidence to justify probable cause in this case seems overwhelming. The PFMA. The arson hit on Rebekah’s parents. The assassin’s confession. The 92 taped conversations. David’s repeated threats to drown Rebekah and her dog. The “missing” posters he tore down. His duplicitous alibis. The bloody tank top recovered from near the beach where Rebekah’s belongings were found. The demonstrable witness tampering of active cases. The subsequent death of potential witnesses.
Then there’s this November 2018 article from Wisconsin’s Tomah Journal entitled “Man Accused of Pointing Pistol in Buckley Park” which describes a man named David Barsotti accosted a couple in a park after his German Shepherd ran at their dogs:
“The couple told police that Barsotti then lifted his shirt, pulled a gun from a holster, and drew the slide back. The woman said Barsotti pointed the gun at her, which made her fear for her life. She placed a call to 911 which she said Barsotti made no attempt to stop. The report said that the two other people witnessed Barsotti point the pistol.”
David likes his guns, and was facing a domestic violence conviction following his March ninth arrest, which would have permanently revoked all of his firearm rights. The Jacobsen recordings make it clear that David seemed more upset that his firearms were confiscated than he was about his missing wife. It also appears that David has dabbled in the business of gun running as well, saying with regards to his confiscated firearms, “I’ve got those deals going on all the time.” Would protecting those guns –and more broadly, David’s legal access to firearms– be motive enough to kill for?
James Terry offered David Barsotti $15,000 if he could pass a ten-question polygraph test. All three of David’s lawyers were offered the same deal, and all four of them complained to Sheriff Toth that James was harassing them. Since polygraphs are not admissible in court, David would have nothing to lose by taking one. Then again, David Barsotti hasn’t made much of an effort to prove his innocence. From day one he’s insisted that Rebekah was dead instead of missing, and even got a memorial tattoo penned into his flesh months prior to the discovery of her body.
Jason Maxwell also believes “the whole river accident is just a decoy” and that Rebekah’s body was stored in a chest freezer, perhaps in the “secret room” of David’s basement. In an interview with Lauren Matthias of Hidden True Crime, Maxwell says, “I haven’t seen pictures of the state of Rebekah, but from what I understand, there wasn’t the decomposition or damage we’d expect from 26 miles in the river over a 10 month period. So I think she could have been in freezer or somewhere cool. And once that high water starts coming up in the spring, that water is fast. So now instead of being in Mineral County, they’re going to be finding a body down in Flathead, which is quite a ways – two rivers over. And he was under the impression that, ‘Hey! If I can throw her over the bridge here, nobody’s going to find her until she ends up in Flathead County.’ Well that river dropped pretty suddenly because of the lack of rain, so that water level dropped. The fisherman wound up finding her in some bushes, 300 yards down from the bridge.”
Triple Bridges area of the Alberton Gorge
Nathan Jacobsen likewise alluded to the possibility that Rebekah’s body had been frozen. When asked point blank by James Terry, “You believe, unequivocally, that he killed her?” Jacobsen responded: “He did it. There’s no doubt in my mind.” Nathan said he first suspected foul play when David told him, “She crossed that line. And it’s a line you should never cross, and she’ll never cross it again.”
Jacobsen believes the primary motive driving foul play lies with the marital property, and describes Barsotti as paranoid to leave the house for fear of its seizure or destruction. “Everything comes down to the house,” he says. “I’m telling you. Look, Bekah wanted to take the house. And he killed her. It comes down to the house and the property. That man will die for that fucking property.”
Researchers of domestic violence are keen to note that the most dangerous moment for a survivor is the period of time following the filing of a no contact order against their former abuser. In the weeks leading up to her disappearance, David continued making threats through text conversations that involved drowning Rebekah and her dog. It seems positively flabbergasting that documented evidence of egregious abuse and death threats led to an arrest that went to trial, and when the victim went missing, Montana’s intrepid law enforcement officers immediately ruled it an “accidental drowning”.
A common thread among those who’ve studied this case is the unanimous agreement that law enforcement did not handle it properly, mishandling the case from the very beginning. Illustrating the stark contrast between Rebekah’s case and a similar case that occurred during the same year, a woman reported missing on December 31, 2021 got DCI help after twelve days and was found after twenty.
Conversely, when it came to Rebekah’s disappearance, law enforcement didn’t secure the scene, take forensics, or task dogs with a search. They refused to release information vital to the investigation, failed to respond to known data points, and obstructed justice at every turn. And whether deliberate negligence or pitiful incompetence, the conspicuous obstruction by law enforcement seems the most destructive and heinous facet of this entire situation.
Two missing cases, but only one of them handled promptly and honestly.
If an assassin can confess to the targets he was hired to neutralize that he was summoned by their son-in-law to kill them, and law enforcement not only refuses to investigate, but outright stonewalls the investigation with truly egregious levels of obstruction, one can’t help but wonder, “Who do you call when no one cares?” And as Nathan Jacobsen says: “Country boys protect their own.”
Angela picketing in Superior, MT
But Angela Mastrovito has come to a different conclusion through all of this. In a recent interview with MTN News, Angela said, with tears welling up in her eyes, “I used to think that if I had to stand alone, I could stand alone and do it. This has taught me that we’re not supposed to stand alone.”
Angela’s resolve to continue fighting in the face of overwhelming grief and insurmountable odds has inspired an underground wellspring of support. People from all over the world have been touched by her story, and more are joining the fight every day to help secure justice for Rebekah. And though Angela will never meet them, she should know that there are countless people who have cried with her, mourned with her, and committed themselves to helping her in whatever capacity they can. This growing community understands that a “threat to justice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere” and that threats to justice should never be tolerated. While the truth can never bring Rebekah back, it may help to prevent her tragic story from repeating.
It pays to be suspicious when powerful people tell you that a certain subject is “off limits”. Our first line of defense against abuses of power is dissent, but entrenched systems have a way of turning seemingly innocuous movements and ideologies to their advantage. Missoula’s latest goodwill coup d’état involves the concerted effort of all local mainstream media, who assert in various ways that criticism of Mayor John Engen is off the table due to his diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. The circumstances, we are told, necessitate an easing of pressure upon the almighty five-term Mayor from dissenters, political opponents and the activist community.
Once again we the people are presented with an emotional argument aimed to distract us into feeling sorry for Mr. John Engen, a man responsible for such a vast amount of human misery it boggles the mind to comprehend. We’re supposed to focus again on feelings instead of facts. Quite ironically, facts that represent heinous crimes of incomprehensible betrayal that have caused terribly hurt feelings across the board for Missoula’s poor and working class.
For those who might think it tasteless to kick a man while he’s down, remember that the Mayor and his cronies have a well-established history of kicking Missoula’s citizens while they’re down. As a matter of routine, low-income residents are rendered homeless by Engen’s real estate parasites, and when outrage inevitably boils over, City officials then patronize the citizenry with condescending accusations of ignorance, i.e. the public just doesn’t understand the policies.
Since Engen took office in 2006 Missoula has become the “next San Francisco.” Under John Engen’s leadership, Missoula’s wealth disparity grew to the 33rd highest in the United States. Rents and property taxes in the Garden City have continuously exploded to the point of displacing thousands of locals. And the people who have become rich from those price hikes are all friendly enough with our mayor to donate to his campaign again and again.
John Engen is the mayor of Missoula who drank on the job for months, then later admitted to his extensive benders after he got the taxpayers to cover his alcohol treatment following an incident that got him kicked off an airplane. John Engen is the mayor who got the taxpayers to pay for his $23,000 gastric bypass surgery, which in the long-haul, accomplished absolutely nothing for his health.
John Engen’s administrative blundering resulted in such egregious abuses of power that Jon Krakauer felt prompted to write a book called Missoula: Rape and the Justice System in a College Town. Enrollment at Missoula’s university never recovered. But John Engen’s bumbling has also cost Missoulians millions in astronomical lawyer fees to wrest control of our water system away from corporate influences, only to see our rates increase dramatically under local management. John Engen’s failed 10-Year-Plan-To-End-Homelessness has ended in such utter failure that his administration defaulted to hiring private goons with loaded guns to patrol the city.
Our bureaucrats speak as though the catastrophic harm done to our neighbors and our communities can somehow be construed as justifiable in any way. They hypnotically chant phrases like “affordable housing” and words like “density” in their Jedi-mind-trick to convince locals that “these are not the taxes you’re looking for.” One needs only to observe the measurable harm done to Missoula over the past decade to acknowledge that the ends will predictably always justify the means for Engen’s donors, sycophants and followers.
So this monster finally gets sick and we’re all supposed to turn on the sympathy waterworks? What about all the displaced families whose lives were ruined by Engen’s real estate buddies? Did any of them ever get sick with a terminal illness?
But Missoula’s liberal voters don’t seem to care as much for those people’s feelings, therefore that brand of suffering doesn’t really exist. In fact, the poor bastards should love what’s happening, especially with the City’s abuse of tax money through TIF, because it’s making so much profit for the people whose feelings do matter. People like Bill Coffee of Stockman Bank, who profits hand-over-fist every time the City passes a new TIF project (or pays interest on the money Stockman laundered through the bureaucracy). Or people like Peter Lambros, who got the City to cough up $8.6 million in taxpayer money to spruce up Southgate Mall, only to stiff Missoulians by flipping the Mall to Washington Prime for $58 million. Or people like Andy Holloran, who earned his TIF money demolishing historic structures to build luxury hotels. All of these players donate money to Engen Inc.
Isn’t it amazing that our beloved Eggman Engen can now run his government smoke-screen show from behind the curtain? He doesn’t even have to come into the office anymore because ostensibly everyone in the area-code feels sorry for him. This arrangement certainly gives new meaning to the term “sitting mayor,” if one does not actually have to sit upon the throne to wield its power. Ordinarily a shadowy puppet master requires a figurehead to actually sit upon the throne while he wields inscrutable power from behind it, but in yet another perversion of the natural order, John has arranged things so he can rule from the shadows without the bother of putting anybody in his place to absorb the criticism of a restless populace. Maximize sympathy. Minimize criticism. Discredit heretics. Perhaps his campaign donors are doing everything they can to continue propping ol’ John up. After all, they’ve all become quite comfortable with the slices of pie this administration has been able to provide to them over the years at the expense of the taxpayers.
Engen maintains power in part by ruthlessly destroying the reputations of his opponents. Jacob Elder became the most recent example of what happens when someone gets in the way of Engen’s political steamroller. Prior to Elder, Engen’s machine tore Lisa Triepke apart on the basis of her divorce. Meanwhile, John was allowed to cheat on his wife while parading around his mistress at public functions, and Missoula saw fit to reward his hypocrisy with media silence and repeated reelections.
John Engen’s government has ruined the lives of countless locals and made a significant contribution to Montana’s role as the Suicide Capital of America. Suicides caused by Engen’s judges filling the jails with petty offenders. Suicides caused by skyrocketing property taxes that displaced families from homes our forefathers built with their bare hands. And the suicides that continue today in the gentrified nightmare that is the community formerly known as Missoula. It’s nothing personal. It’s just business. The “new normal” in Engen’s Missoula.
It is surely a coincidence that all the newspapers John wrote for are still in business, while all the independent media that ever dared to express criticism of John’s policies were systematically eliminated. Engen’s political machine razes anything that gets in its way, transforming purple mountains majesty into mountains of garbage, collateral wreckage and wasted lives. John Engen has helped his big business buddies railroad the community under a for-profit banner before then mercilessly patronizing anyone left willing to vocalize their outrage about Missoula’s new predatory direction. He actually shut off a citizen’s microphone during public comment time on the basis of “untrue information,” in-turn violating the first amendment of our constitution (which John, a longtime journo himself, should himself be aware of). Apparently John’s policies are so perfect they needn’t be articulated, and the blasphemies of critics are wrong by default of opposing a sacrosanct deity.
Lies and spin are all locals can ever depend on, be it the silly rationalizations for chopping down all the trees on the County Court House lawn (including the Blue Spruce planted to honor 9/11’s fallen, dubbed the “9/11 Memorial Tree” to help Missoulians “never forget”), or the reasons for employing mercenaries to patrol the city with live ammunition, or the truth about the demonstrable harms of Tax Increment Financing. And with Missoula’s vanishing tax base unable to cover the basic costs of road maintenance and schools, they’ve proposed a “local option” sales tax. Perhaps none of this seems surprising given that Engen’s very first campaign manager, John Talbott, came to Missoula after retiring from the CIA to work for Lee Enterprises, parent company of The Missoulian and the same company that bought the Missoula Independent just to shut it down. The duplicity never ends.
Given that Missoula’s donor class requires Engen’s policies remain in place, the post-election hand-off of the mayoral coattails to Council President Gwen Jones might be more premeditated than many are willing to admit. Having proven herself an uncompromising Engen loyalist, Gwen can help Missoula’s donor class feel secure in the guarantee of a continuity of government. Engen steps aside. Jones steps up. The monopolies remain intact. The donors remain happy. The underclass continues to suffer, toil and die. The business train remains on track and on schedule. It seems like nothing—not even a terminal illness—can stop John’s monstrous mayoral machine.
Perhaps John’s tumor (if it’s real) stands as the harbinger of a harsher reality relating to Missoula’s increasing hypertoxicity. It seems incontrovertible to assert that Missoula has become a hyper-toxic environment, and our Great Leader’s sickness could be a warning for the rest of us to get out while we still can. Maybe spending another minute engaged with this leviathan can only further ensnare one’s spirit and deteriorate one’s health. Because Missoula’s toxicity isn’t limited only to its political swamp of eternal stench; it’s now also literally toxic, again due to Engen’s duplicitous leadership.
For example, Engen’s Parks and Rec department indiscriminately sprays carcinogenic RoundUp all over our schools, parks, trails and riverbeds. This thoughtless activity pollutes Missoula’s aquifer, and in-turn, Missoula’s source of drinking water, with a deadly carcinogen. Under Engen’s lead, Parks ‘n Wreck also chopped most of the trees down along the Clark Fork River and viola! A plethora of unlawful homeless encampments are revealed for a different kind of roundup to occur, this time leading homeless individuals into the fenced-walls of Missoula’s Clark Fork Lane Concentration Camp. Said camp sits along the shoreline of the Clark Fork River, which is now so full of the lead, arsenic and chromium from upriver mines (like Butte’s mile-wide, mile-deep superfund site known as the Berkeley Pit) that Missoulians can no longer safely eat the fish angled from its shores. Add to this the atmospheric inversion that results in some of the worst air quality in the region, made worse by the radioactive coal shipped through from a not-so-distant sacrifice zone on its way to a Chinese power plant, and you’ve got a recipe for manifesting a multitude of illnesses.
Functioning as the administrator for so much of this corporate pillaging, John Engen has also finally succumbed to the same force that he has allowed himself to become in his community. As above, so below, and John has himself become a metastasizing cancer that daily threatens the health, safety and survival of the people surrounding him. Engen’s tentacles strangle and smother life from every corner of the Garden City until the only thing left are the lifeless condo towers looming over a concrete landfill trampled by tourists, degraded by developers and sold off by politicians. Symptoms of disease.
When Mayor Bill Cregg was diagnosed with a terminal illness, he put a gun to his head and splattered the wall with his brains. When Mayor John Engen was diagnosed with a terminal illness, he hid in the shadows and put the bill for his treatments on the taxpayers. A parasite vying for self preservation. A smug traitor who sold out his neighbors with a condescending smile. No sympathy for the devil.
The human sense of smell is predicated upon the detection of tiny particles diffusing from their source into the air we breathe, which we experience as aromas and fragrances. So whether you’re detecting bananas or dog doo with your olfactory nerve, what you’re actually sensing is the presence of tiny bits of physical banana (or dog doo) floating into your nose. Keep this fact in mind because we’ll be returning to it presently.
The homelessness catastrophe unfolding in Missoula’s liberal utopia continues plummeting to previously unimaginable depths. As many locals are already aware, our beloved Mayor John Engen leveraged this crisis to score political points in 2012 with his fabulous 10-Year-Plan-To-End-Homelessness. In his 2015 TEDx talk at the University of Montana, Engen declared that, “We in Missoula, Montana are going to end homelessness because we believe that everyone has a right to a safe, decent place to live.”
Ten years into the 10-Year-Plan and things appear to have grown worse. Much worse. As droves of locals are pushed into homelessness by skyrocketing property taxes and increased rents, some decide to live in their cars while others move away. Many more choose suicide. And last summer we witnessed a previously unimaginable extreme of this war waged on working people when literally thousands of Missoula locals were pushed out of their housing simply because giant property management companies realized what a gold mine they all were sitting on.
The demand for housing in Missoula has exploded beyond available supply to the point that rents doubled and tripled across the board in the summer of 2021. With few protections in place for renters, our homeless population ballooned, and our leaders continue to shrug it off as simply “the market’s will.” We ought to note that Mayor John Engen’s NeoLiberal policies aren’t helping any of this, but his administration continues adding insult to injury by affixing feeble Band-Aids to mortal wounds.
Said shelters are increasingly coming under the watchful eye of Rogers International, a shady private security firm hired by the City of Missoula with federal COVID money through Reaching Home under a $670,000 contract. Reaching Home is the organization tasked with enacting Mayor Engen’s failed 10-Year-Plan-To-End-Homelessness by establishing “a strong Coordinated Entry System” that, they say, “makes homelessness rare, brief, and non-recurring for people in our community.” It seems obvious to anyone who lives here that these plans have utterly failed, because homelessness is anything but rare, brief or non-recurring in Missoula. And instead of asking why the Garden City now has such a burgeoning homeless population, the companies financing our political leaders have found ways to profit handsomely from the disaster by exacerbating and prolonging its central causes. Good-olde Disaster Capitalism at work.
But Missoula’s leaders have proven incapable of admitting fault or even apologizing for mistakes, exemplified most recently by their conceited reaction to the wave of legitimate criticism regarding the Rogers contract. Proving once again that Missoula’s entrenched bureaucracy will do almost anything to defend the profits of its donors, Emily Armstrong of Reaching Home was caught in a lie last week when she was quoted in the Missoulian as saying that schools and neighbors explicitly asked for armed mercenaries to patrol their neighborhoods as part of Operation Shelter.
Unfortunately for Miss Armstrong, recently published Emails prove that Barbara Frank, the principal of Lowell Elementary—one of the schools primarily affected—was completely unaware of this development. A far cry from Armstrong’s claims that “schools near the shelters have asked for security to just patrol the area.”
But Council President (and soon to be de facto Mayor) Gwen Jones chimed in to further belittle the ignorant concerns of heretics and naysayers, with all-too familiar patronizing condescension, suggesting that freshmen Counsil members “do more research to understand what led to the security contract and why it took its current form.” Because our entrenched bureaucracy will do anything to defend the profits of its donors.
While it remains unproven that such shady deals as private security occupation of our neighborhoods have resulted in direct kickbacks to the likes of John Engen, Rogers International is only one of the many splashbacks soaking Missoula’s hapless bottoms; the inevitable consequence of a load too heavy with corruption; the guaranteed result of an over-indulgence in meals scooped from the eponymous “pork barrel” of pork barrel politics. Garbage in, garbage out.
Alongside this immense shelter infrastructure, Missoula’s Homeless-Industrial-Complex recently opened their latest and greatest human misery experiment, the Clark Fork Lane Concentration Camp. Of course, the “liberal” leaders of Missoula have chosen to couch the abysmal reality of this facility in euphemism with the less offensive, politically correct moniker, “Authorized Campsite.”
If you think “concentration camp” seems a tad hyperbolic, you might be unfamiliar with the conditions on the ground, including the chain link fence and razor wire outlining the perimeter of this facility. You might be unaware of the large cell tower looming over this encampment, exposing the inhabitants to dangerous levels of sustained EMF radiation. You may be oblivious to the armed private security firm that’s now employed to conduct “sweeps” throughout the city to roundup homeless strays back into this corral. And you might not be aware of the occupying “homeless gang” that made headlines following an “axe assault” last month.
While such ugly headlines represent an unwelcome skid mark in the pristine white shorts of the Garden City, this is the true face of Engen’s Missoula; the other, “other cheek” upon which we could never bring ourselves to turn. A cold dystopia characterized by bleak desperation. An entire working demographic made obsolete by automation, outsourcing, and austerity, left to wander an increasingly hostile city with no purpose or place or meaning. A hopeless nightmare visited on occasion by political tourists who take selfies and pat themselves on the back for exposing themselves to such degradation, before ultimately retiring to their comfortable fantasies and forgetting all about those people, until then next political cycle.
But the devil resides in the details, and the fact that this homeless encampment is surrounded by Missoula’s sewage treatment facility (which includes the Composting Facility site as well as the Poplar tree farm meant to absorb and digest Missoula’s wastewater) may be the most offensive, egregious, and diabolical aspect.
As anyone remotely familiar with the Missoula Valley will tell you, hot summer nights invite an unbearable stench into the homes of those who live anywhere near the sewage treatment facility. Those willing to brave the nearby Super WalMart parking lot on a hot day know this, and motorists routinely roll up their windows when approaching the nearby Reserve Street Bridge.
It stinks. But that stench is more than just an inconvenience. Since smells represent diffused particles that have become disconnected from their source, as mentioned earlier, Missoula’s “Authorized Camp” situation presents a unique health crisis.
Every poop a Missoulian takes into a porcelain receptacle gets flushed down into the municipal pipes and pushed around on its way to the sewage plant. And on hot summer days the combined fecal offerings of over 70,000 humans lifts into the air around said plant. It is therefore reasonable to assert that the atmosphere surrounding the facility contains the recently excreted poop particles direct from the asses of every housed Missoulian living within the city. Those particles are then continuously breathed in by homeless people who were forcibly relocated to this location from “unlawful encampments” all throughout the valley by armed enforcers.
One might be forgiven for likening the degenerating state of American democracy to a cesspool, however unflattering such a comparison might be to the cesspool. The diligent action of barely-better-than-bacteria private interests constantly breaking down all available resources to feed their own microbial hunger feels very much encouraged by our elected officials and their sprawling bureaucracy. Under optimal circumstances, a cesspool can be a necessary and beneficial amenity. But Missoula’s countless radical adventures in political corruption has brought the cesspool into our City Hall, into our living rooms, and now directly into our very lungs.
The Martin v. City of Boise decision by the 9th Circuit limits a City’s ability to criminalize homelessness, meaning Cities cannot enforce anti-camping ordinances if they do not have enough shelter beds available for their homeless population. Therefore, a municipality does not have carte blanche to raid shantytowns and other homeless encampments with assault rifles and bulldozers in the style of They Live, unless the City has designated a suitable alternative location for society’s underclass.
“… in Missoula, people live in vehicles, tents, and trailers — and they park where they can. But oftentimes, that’s against city ordinance. Missoula City Ordinance 9.34.040 states “it is unlawful for any person to sit, lie or sleep upon any street or alley within the city limits of Missoula.”… when Missoula Police respond to these types of calls, officers will now encourage people to move to the camping site on Clark Fork Lane.”
That’s correct, folks. Yes, they “encourage” people to move, in exactly the same way the Salish tribe was encouraged to relocate to the Flathead Indian Reservation over a century ago. Just as Japanese and Italian Americans were encouraged to relocate to our very own Fort Missoula Alien Detention Center during the Second World War. Also note the careful framing of this newer ordinance that has generated nothing but controversy since its passage in 2013. The more things change the more they remain the same, and the classical cautionary mantra now goes something like, “First they came for the homeless, and I did not speak out, for I was not yet homeless.”
Missoula’s modern authorities seem just as eager to exact military force on the underclasses as the Copper Barons of yesteryear were, as became apparent by the strike teams armed with assault rifles near the Reserve Street Tent City last summer, where reporters were told to “Get back!” and “Keep moving!” It’s nice to see Missoula has graduated from unconstitutionally criminalizing homelessness with zero tolerance bans on sitting, lying or sleeping in public, to simply rounding up homeless individuals and placing them in a euphemistically named “Authorized Camp.”
This sign appears unironically on the chain link fences of the “Authorized Camp.”
But with economic uncertainty approaching an all-time high, more and more families have stepped into the shoes of the so-called “vulnerable population”. Prior to the 2020 global shutdown it was already the case that 70% of Americans were just one paycheck away from joining the homeless population, which stood at more than half-a-million strong in the U.S. It is disconcerting to imagine that your neighbor could only be a mistake or two away from ending up fecalboarded in this concentration camp, and that it could all start with an act as innocuous as pinching a loaf of bread to feed the family. The fruitful harvest of late-stage capitalism’s dog-eat-dog game of musical-chair economics.
And as for the location of said Camp, Missoula’s leadership have chosen a parking lot under a cell tower, outlined in chain-link, surrounded by sewage and guarded under the watchful browneye of private security agents armed with guns and live ammunition. The City could have chosen any number of better spots for this space, but instead chose to further embarrass an already disgraced municipality with a situation for which no other phrase but “Concentration Camp” feels adequately honest.
So consider it during your next morning constitutional; consider how such well-meaning endeavors as the United States Constitution and the City of Missoula’s 10-Year-Plan-To-End-Homelessness led us to this moment. Remember that a tiny portion of our bowels’ contribution to the movement could literally end up in the lungs of the destitute; that this is the product delivered in place of the high and beautiful wave of reform we ordered.
So now, just over ten years into the 10-year plan, with your bran muffin soaking up the coffee you downed at breakfast, let the morning sun shine on your face and exposed thighs. And remember that with the right kind of nose you can almost smell the low water mark, the spot where the wave of civic enthusiasm finally broke, and flushed away.
Very little happens in the dead of a frigid winter night in Missoula, Montana. The roads are empty. The stores have closed. The atmosphere is still. The town sleeps. It is not unusual for the peace to broken by dancing shadows which announce the approach of headlights followed soon by the crunching and popping of tires rolling against the icy pathway. But on this early morning, the headlights do herald the approach of something unusual.
A Jeep Cherokee appears, inching its way down the narrow alley. The creeping vehicle soon reappears on the neighboring street, then passes slowly through the alley again. Though puttering along repeatedly through the same streets and alleys at a half-a-mile-per-hour, this driver is not lost. The suspicious activity continues into the next day and following night, and neighbors begin to take notice. But no one in the neighborhood seems to know who these people are or what they might want.
In December the first pictures of the suspicious vehicle emerge. The pictures shared by area residents show a Jeep with Lithia dealership plates. The vehicle haunting the West side alleys is also identified by small but distinct decals reading, “Rogers International: true risk based security solutions”.
While Missoula’s North side stands as one of the area’s last remaining working-class enclaves, that doesn’t necessarily mean the neighborhoods are the crime-ridden, uninhabitable, no-go zones some might have you believe they are. But that’s exactly how they’re described by David Pritchard, President of security firm Rogers International PLLC, in a recent piece by NBC Montana:
“I would say definitely if anyone was to drive by that area and look at it, you know, it’s quite a bit different than it was three to four months ago.” ~David Pritchard
David Pritchard doesn’t live in these neighborhoods, but he is right about the situation being “quite a bit different than it was.” Because upon his company’s contract with the City of Missoula, anonymous vehicles began stalking through the residential alleyways of Missoula’s West side and Franklin-to-the-Fort neighborhoods.
According to their website, Rogers International is a private security company that claims to be based in Missoula, Montana. A quick google search places their offices at 1211 South Reserve in Missoula’s Montgomery Building, but a visit to this address reveals that Rogers’ offices do not exist there, even though that’s how it is currently registered with the Montana Secretary of State. The plot thickens.
According to public records, Rogers International was formed on 18 March 2020 and were contracted by the City in the autumn of 2021 for $670,000 to conduct their patented “risk-based security solutions” at a growing list of Missoula locations, starting with our most prominent homeless facilities.
According to NBC Montana, “The Rogers contract with Missoula is capped this year at $670,000, the money from federal COVID-19 relief funds.” As the dust of the Corona Crisis hysteria settles, it seems the federal funds allocated for replenishing an economy damaged by lockdowns have been spent on a private police force. But even though Rogers is paid by public institutions with funds from the American Rescue Plan, this arrangement somehow got framed as “privately funded” last month on KGVO:
“KGVO News reached out to Jesse Jeager, Director of Development and Advocacy for the Poverello Center for an update on the two facilities as the weather takes a turn for the worse this week. … Jeager did not comment on the security at the Johnson Street facility due to the fact that security is privately funded by the City of Missoula.”
A cynical observer could be forgiven for thinking that the City of Missoula and their new private police force have perhaps seen too many superhero movies. It’s almost certainly the case for David Grossman of Killology Research Group, who was recently hired by the City to deliver his crazy-eyed sermons to local cops where he raves about how killing humans on the job invariably results in, “they all say, ‘the best sex I’ve had in months.’ Both partners are very invested in some very intense sex. There’s not a whole lot of perks that come with this job. You find one, relax and enjoy it, ah?”
Grossman goes on to say, “We are at war and you are the front line troops in this war. … So you do this. On your way home tonight, park your vehicle on the overpass for just a minute. Step out of your vehicle for just a minute. Look out on your city. Look at your citizens going about their lives, and know deep in your gut that today, at the risk of your life, you made their world a better place. Whether they know it or not. Then walk up to that bridge rail, put your hands on that rail, look out on your city, and let your cape blow in the wind.”
Since Missoula’s liberal leaders aren’t bashful about bringing Killology’s habit-forming violence fetishes to a police force near us, one must wonder about the intentions of beefing up the local garrison with private gunslingers who are even less accountable than the police. A whole private industry has sprung up right under our noses, where a group of armed vigilantes vow to solve the “risk based” problems of our fair city through means apparently unavailable to the police.
One Rogers International employee said his company was contracted because local police lack the resources to perform the job. “We are more of a deterrent force,” he said. “Because at this point, the homeless populationdo know that we are here. We are taking steps to prevent criminal activity in certain areas.”
What does it say about Missoula that homeless and low-income people are considered “suspicious” and stigmatized automatically in association with criminal activity? And by patrolling for “the homeless,” does Rogers International mean to imply that lower income neighborhoods are more susceptible to crime? Because that accusation made Councilwoman Heidi West publicly cry bitter tears of resentment two years ago at the 16 December 2019 City Council meeting:
“I think it’s entirely unfair to say that, people that live in low income neighborhoods, sorry, love where they live less. … It was a very hurtful and classist thing to say. And I think that we all value where we live and some of us have less resources to defend that space.”
It is worth noting that no such accusation was actually made for Councilwoman West to tearfully respond to. Her weepy proclamation that “we all value where we live” was, in fact, made in response to the pleas of hundreds of Missoula’s working people begging the City Council not to gentrify yet another working-class neighborhood. However, the specter of classism was thought to be so persuasive that Councilwoman West fabricated the accusation out of whole cloth in order to distract from the effects of her own votes, which are partially responsible for the homeless crisis the city is now hiring mercenaries to “solve”.
These kinds of Public-Private Partnerships often result in even less transparency for we the public. Why couldn’t that $670,000 be used to employ more police officers? Is this Missoula’s careful version of “defund the police”?
Mayor John Engen tells us his reasons for stepping up Missoula’s show of private force:
“We also have armed security here at City Hall now, um, and as much as I regret to say it, it’s kind of the nature of the world these days.”
John must of course forgive the confusion of his citizens who observe that the City Hall building is in fact Missoula’s Police headquarters. Are we meant to understand that the Missoula Police are incapable of managing the security of their own building? Do the police themselves somehow require protection from the citizens they protect and serve? What resources and armaments do City Hall’s private security guards have access to that the police are restricted from employing? Have the causes of the nationwide labor shortage also disgruntled police officers to the point that they just aren’t interested in the work anymore? More to the point: why this rapidly expanding plethora of private security firms?
Rogers International are the third such firm currently employed by Missoula’s paranoid leaders. As Martin “Gomer” Kidston reported for the Missoula Current in November of 2020:
“Missoula County will start by moving from Black Knight Security and Investigation to a new contract with Phoenix Protective Corp. out of Spokane in an effort to tighten access to the downtown courthouse and improve customer service.”
How do Missoula’s police officers feel about this?
Contacts within Missoula’s Police Department confirm that Rogers International has made itself quite unpopular with law enforcement. According to anonymous police sources, RI security agents follow “suspicious” pedestrians around town in their vehicles and incessantly call MPD whenever said pedestrians sit down somewhere. If a homeless individual wanders too far from the stables, a Rogers Rent-A-Cop will promptly alert law enforcement officers to roundup strays back into the corral. But this boy-who-cried-wolf mentality has annoyed MPD officers and contributed to an atmosphere of professional animosity.
And the occupational hostilities don’t end there. An open letter from the Poverello Center’s Executive Director, Jill Bonny, reveals that the staff at Montana’s largest homeless shelter aren’t too thrilled about this arrangement either. She writes, “Recently, the City of Missoula signed a contract with Roger’s International to provide security to the Cedar St/Hawthorne and Johnson/North Ave neighborhoods. Like you, we have mixed feelings about this. … This is not a company that the Poverello Center has hired, and we do not get to control the contract.”
Speaking of who gets to control the contract, just how much are these companies capable of doing? Exactly what kinds of operations are Rogers presently involved with here in Missoula?
The “What We Do” tab on Rogers’ site declares that their company believes in presenting their clients with “specifically tailored services” which include private investigations, technical surveillance, camera installation, drone security services, threat assessment, threat mitigation, threat management plans, crime prevention, firearms training, “and much more…”
What exactly makes them “international” remains to be seen. But RI patrol areas don’t seem limited to shelters or their immediate surroundings because Rogers aren’t guarding the homeless shelters per se. They’re patrolling the neighborhoods surrounding those shelters, and have begun pushing out into the rest of the city, placing an ever widening scope of Missoula’s street grid under the management of this private security firm. Even the Montana Department of Transportation (MDOT) now contracts with Rogers International. The patrol maps recently released in local media show us how a single contract can place a massive area under private patrol.
To ask whether Rogers were contracted with public money to conduct surveillance on private citizens seems redundant since conspicuous surveillance of citizens seems to be the task they were explicitly hired to execute—just as long as said surveillance pertains only to homeless citizens who can’t afford attorneys to defend their rights. Where those operations end and unlawful surveillance begins, on the other hand, could be anyone’s guess. Missoula Mayor John Engen certainly has a well-established reputation for publicly destroying his political opponents and retaliating against his critics. It is surely a coincidence that Rogers personnel began appearing in the neighborhoods and rear-view mirrors of several prominent journalists when these contracted patrol routes officially began in October of 2021.
But suppose there is an incident at the Poverello where a Rogers guard employs the use of lethal force. Who takes legal responsibility in such a scenario? Is the City liable, or is Rogers? It already seems the case that Poverello guests can be murdered with such impunity that grieving family members can’t even get suitable legal representation because there’s no money at that end of that rainbow. Private enforcers are, by definition, less accountable than police and the expanding multitude of different security firms complicates who ultimately accepts responsibility for the liability hot potato.
“It’s only a matter of time before somebody gets shot,” said a Riverside Pawn employee to local activist Travis Mateer. This statement was uttered in response to observing armed Rogers agents on a foot pursuit of a homeless man beneath the Reserve Street Bridge. An advantage of hiring private contractors is that they’re under absolutely no obligation to obey the Constitution, nor are they required to respect your civil rights.
And while Rogers’ employees might be quick to dodge questions pertaining to their use of force, David Pritchard provides an unvarnished truth regarding their lethal capabilities while on patrol:
“To me it’s more important for me as a business owner at the end of the day that my guys get home safe, um, you know, than the other way around. You can’t put a price tag on somebody’s life.”
Perhaps it is outside the purview of Rogers‘ contract to place a price on human life, but the practice is routine in certain industries, as could be described to you by any insurance adjuster, personal injury lawyer, or as seen in the $39,000 cash incentives related to involuntary intubation of hospital patients throughout 2020. But I digress.
According to KECI, the City’s contract with Rogers stipulates they are not allowed to carry firearms into the Poverello Center. But David Pritchard makes it clear that, in fact, they are allowed to carry firearms into the Poverello—as long as there’s a “reason” for doing so.
“The Poverello has told us we’re more than welcome to come into the building. If there’s not a direct reason behind it, the firearm is not to come in with us.” David goes on to say, “Then you know, that’s kind of the, get in, do what you need to do, and get out as quick as possible.”
When it comes to the business of patrolling peaceful neighborhoods, many of Pritchard’s statements smack of an occupying force in a conflict zone. Get in, do what needs to be done, and get my people home safe. If Missoula were to be considered a conflict zone, that might distinguish Rogers International from private security, placing them more definitively as a mercenary outfit, since a mercenary is “an armed civilian paid to perform military operations in a conflict zone.”
Whether Rogers International qualifies as a paramilitary force is currently an open question, but in a truly surreal twist, Pritchard goes on to mention the Fort Hood shooting during his interview with NBC Montana. It is difficult to guess what Pritchard meant to imply by invoking the mass murder of 13 individuals by U.S. Army Major Nidal Hasan. Perhaps attempting to reassure the interviewer and their audience about the mental stability of his armed enforcers, his reminder that catastrophic violence can come from the most unexpected sources stands as cold comfort for the citizens of Missoula who see their publicly-funded and accountable police being gradually supplanted by a private occupying force whose training, accountability, and mental stability could be as lacking as their transparency.
